I have had problems on my work computer with viruses in the past, and I have gone from semi-protected to "armed-to-the teeth," but on a low-budget scale. I regularly run RAV and Panda Activescan, and have ZoneAlarm installed (following that nasty recurring explored.exe, which we found was coming from somewhere in our intranet/network).
I also have installed and running Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition, which I update regularly, but tend to have little or no faith in this because a) it seems almost always to be the first thing to get hit by a virus and b) when doing side-by-side scans comparing RAV and ActiveScan, the last two always seem to find stuff that got missed by the Symantec software.
And, because of the two, RAV and ActiveScan, ActiveScan seems better at being able to repair virus-hit files, I tend to use this more than everything else. But lately, I have had problems in that it will run for a while until it reaches a certain file name and then just seems to use up all the CPU resources and doesn't proceed past this point. The strange thing is, I deleted this file and removed all traces of it (e.g. from the Recent Files folder), and still when I run ActiveScan, it hangs up on this nonexistent file.
I have also gone into the registry and removed all traces of entries that have "Panda" or "ActiveScan" in them, as well as renaming and moving the folder containing all the .dll's and other ActiveScan-related files, thinking that one or more of the files that are involved with ActiveScan might be bolluxed. When I reran ActiveScan, it went ahead and reinstalled, but still got hung at the ghost file.
I have also run the Symantec program and RAV and neither of these can find a problem.
What the heck is happening here? |

I neglected to mention that the file in question was an .hqx file, which was sent to me by a Mac user. I can understand that if an archive shows up on the checklist of most av programs these days, it is unpacked and each file in it is checked. The thing that I don't understand is how activescan can be adding to its checklist a file that doesn't even exist anymore. |
