A story on the local news last night got me thinking about this. A fellow downloaded a dialer while clicking on the X button in a pop-up window (that's the button that's supposed to close the window right ?). Of course, he didn't know he'd installed a dialer until he got his long distance bill from his internet provider.
So while most of us think of pop-ups as nothing more than an annoyance they can be much deadlier than that. While anti-spyware tools such as Spybot Search and Destroy or Spyware Blaster should keep dialers from being installed on your system you need to remember that the bad guys are always trying to find a new way in, and the update you do tomorrow may not stop the dialer you download today.
So include a good pop-up stopper in your anti-spyware arsenal. It will prevent the pop-ups from appearing in the first place and you, or your kids, are less likely to download a dialer.
