Lately when I manually try and update the Free version of AVG it basically doesn't seem to connect to their servers. I had spoken to two other people that are using the Free version and they are also having the same problem. In some cases you get a box appearing stating your up to date (which I know I wasn't) and in another instant it just sits there and finally comes up stating your not connected to the internet. Last nite I tried about 4 times, finally it started to download the virus signatures but ever so slowing - Now I'm updated to version 6.0.614 with a virus database of 393 released 3/5/04.
Anyone else having these update problems or suggestions? Rolling Eyes

I'm having the same problem here. Best thing to do is go to Grisoft's site and download the updates manually.

I also had the same problem with the updating procedure except I never got mine to work at all. Seems I tried atleast 6 times or so. I downloaded and am running the AVG 7.0 Pro trial version in which I have had no problems with updating. Just updated a few minutes ago actually. I have been wanting to write Grisoft, but there is no tech support for the free version or trial versions....how convenient IT Angry Sounds like the manual download of the virus def's is the way to go, until they make that difficult too. Well...I know I won't buy an antivirus with these standards. WTG Grisoft!

Ditto on this problem. It just started happening to me recently, although I can't pinpoint the date. So far I'm very disappointed, as this is one of the best freeware programs out there, and I've touted it as such. As there is no "support" for the free version (and they won't even let you contact them via their web form), I wonder how they are apprised of problems? Would be nice if they at least had a "recent news" section, or a support forum like Outpost firewall has for their freeware product.

I'd suggest this is probably caused by overloaded servers.

With all the recent viruses and the following variants, there's bound to be more than expected traffic.

It may, in fact, be due to server problems indeed. Yesterday, for the first time in quite a while, I was able to connect.

I thought it had to do with the way the AVG program uses Internet Explorer settings in Windows to determine your connection, so I went to the Internet Properties/Connections/LAN Settings and clicked on "Automatically detect setttings". Immediately after this, AVG was able to verify that I had the most up-to-date definition file (I had manually downloaded and installed it earlier that day). I thought I had solved the problem

However, today I went back in and unchecked that connection settings option, and AVG was still able to connect and get the most recent update (released today).

So go figure. Doesn't work for weeks, then I post on here about it, and the problem fixes itself. Ain't that a b****?
