This past week, daughter's NPF2002 icon in systray shows the red 'x' on the icon on startup...that means it is disabled...when it shouldn't be!
I have gone into msconfig to make sure that the iamapp.exe and nisserv.exe are both checkmarked to load at startup.
What do I need to do to fix this problem?
TIA for any and all help.
Her OS=ME/IE6+/cable, etc.

Hi LadyL. Just trying to get a feel for the problem: can you enable the firewall manually by right-clicking the systray icon?
(For info, I run NIS (2003 though)- it usually starts up disabled (red ex), and then enables after a couple of minutes once everything has settled down.)

Yes...she can rt click on the icon in the systray to enable it...that's no problem...but this just started this past week...always used to load properly after the NAV icon loaded in systray.
She shouldn't have to continue rt-clicking that 'x' once it is loaded.
Thanks for replying.

No, I agree. Just trying to work through the problem with you step by step. I take it you have also checked the start-up options for Norton from within its own options - if multiple people are using the computer (perhaps without your knowledge?) maybe someone disabled it after problems trying to reach a blocked site... don't know whether that would be reflected in msconfig... I'm sure you checked that stuff.
How long have you actually waited for it to become enabled after booting? Depending on the network, I have sometimes waited between 5 and 10 minutes. Doesn't sound long but it is when I'm sitting there waiting to go, and the temptation is to start fiddling...
My final suggestion would be to take a look at the logs, to see if you can make sense of any errors that appear. They can be very useful. There are several logs and I suggest you clear them all first, then reboot, wait awhile, then take a look. You can get to them through the main Norton interface >Statistics>View logs I think.
Well, apart from that, I don't know. I guess I haven't been much use, LadyL. I hope someone else here can provide some help.
Good luck!

She is the only one using that computer...unless I go over there and do her 'maintenance' - updates for SSD/Ad-Aware/SpywareBlaster, clean out her temps, etc.
This just started last week as I mentioned in original post.
Msconfig has both nisserv & iamapp checked.
She is on cable, so startup time isn't an issue...it's just the loading of NAV first, then the NPF icon...which has now started to have that stupid red 'x' on it...she or myself - whichever - can rt click on that 'x'...popup box with the 'enable/disable,etc' options...just click on it and it becomes enabled!...maybe 1/2 second??? Now, when I use the NPF desktop icon (dbl click) to check on it...it will state 'disabled'...then I click on the tab 'enable' and it becomes enabled.
I will have to go over there tomorrow and check those logs and see if I can find anything weird, etc.
I have a funny feeling that something may have become corrupt (I'm the installer/uninstaller/fixer-upper on her machine )... *sighs*
Will let you know what I find and will post on it .
Thanks for your interest..

Hmmm, kinda reminds me of http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,10331029~mode=flat after that last Liveupdate. Don't know, but you might want to see if that gives you any ideas.

Just read that link...will have to check on her pc to see if services.exe is listed....it's not on my pc under any of the Symantec folders.
You think maybe an uninstall /re-install of both NSW2002 & NPF2002 would be a better idea than trying to hunt around for a 'fix'? A 'clean' install of both should fix the problem...I hope!

Services.exe is a Win XP app. (May exist in earlier versions, also.)
