Perhaps I missed it but couldn't find it in the documentation -- will virus updates happen automatically or must the user do so manually?

Yes, you can but I do mine manually. For that matter, I do all my updates that way.
When I want to update I open the AVGuard, select File, and then select Start Internet Update. The wizard opens and I click on Start at the bottom.
You need to enable the Tools/Scheduler from the Main Antivir program.
Look also under Options/Internet Updater in the Help Menu (context) for further instructions on automatic updates.

In the scheduler help or the main help menu? Actually I can't find the items you mention in either....

Howdy,
To start the scheduler to allow auto updating:
1. Right click on AVGuard Icon in systray.
2. Click on "Start Main AntiVir Program". A system test will be done at this time.
3. Click on "Tools"
4. Click on "Scheduler". Here it will ask if you want to start Scheduler at boot up. Your decision, I don't any more, I have enough startups.
5. Click on "Help" to read more on the scheduler. When done close the help window.
6. Click on "Insert". Set up your desired functions!
Manually updating:
Easy way:
1. Right click on AVGuard Icon in systray.
2. Click on "Start Internet update".
3. Click on "Start". (Bottom Middle of Window).
4. Wait until Versions have been checked. Be Patient - This can take time depending on server load!!!
5. When updates are available you will be asked if you want to download and install. Click "Yes". When no updates are available you will be asked if you want to exit.
Not so easy way:
1. Right click on AVGuard Icon in systray.
2. Click on "Start Main AntiVir Program". A system test will be done at this time.
3. Click on "Tools"
4. Click on "Start Internet update".
5. Click on "Start". (Bottom Middle of Window).
6. Wait until Versions have been checked. Be Patient - This can take time depending on server load!!!
7. When updates are available you will be asked if you want to download and install. Click "Yes". When no updates are available you will be asked if you want to exit.

In the Main Program Window (not the AVGuard GUI) you see these headings above the shortcut icons:
File Options Tools Report Help
Click on Help. In the dropdown box you see Context F1. Click it. You get an alphabetical list. Look for Internet Updater. Click on it. Voila!
