Windows XP Pro shuts down and/or reboots randomly

Wow, I'm not even sure where to post this...I don't even know where to start with the problem. About a month ago my computer rebooted for some odd reason and kept doing so...it couldn't seem to boot up. I finally powered it down for a minute or so then it started up fine. Upon logging into windows I got a message that said "Windows has recovered from a serious error". When I clicked on "track error" (or something like that) I went to a Microsoft site that said something about a driver device error but they didn't have any information on it. After doing a google search I found that others had similar problems due to a glitch of some sort (if I remember right) with XP. Supposedly, when XP recovers from a "seroius error" it forgets it recovered and keeps giving you the message. So I downloaded some fixerupper tool and it worked for a while. Meanwhile, my computer began either rebooting or powering down completely on random occassions. It still had trouble rebooting and I would have to power it down each time. My dad suggested a problem with the power source, but that wouldn't explain the trouble with rebooting. A friend suggested that a virus was trying to boot and between my cable internet and some brainy thing in my comp, it wasn't booting up because it didn't want to load the virus. I don't know. So I updated NAV Corporate for the millionth time (I had been scanning almost daily at this point), but didn't find anything. Another friend suggested that I had the Sasser. So I did all the safety precautions for THAT (and every other new virus threat I could find on microsoft and ca.com), as well as all the cleaners, but still no luck. I also switched my power source directly to the wall (it was plugged into a strip with a million other things including my microwave). This seemed to help but maybe it's just wishful thinking. At the present, my computer still powers down and reboots occassionally...anywhere from an hour to 2 days in between occurrences and nothing specific seems to trigger it (doesn't even matter if I'm using it or not). I haven't gotten the "recovered from serious error" message in a while, though I have gotten it occassionally even after the afore-mentioned action. It doesn't seem to be having trouble rebooting much anymore though. Oddly enough, my screensaver has been going crazy slow for about the same amount of time. I noticed that cidaemon.exe was running 99% of my processes at the time so I killed that (thanks to a string that I found on this site, which is why I just joined...tonight actually). A few times, I have gotten little popups about corrupted files upon startup, and scandisk has found and fixed some prob's on occassion as well. Also, the first screen that appears upon starting up my computer isn't always the same...sometimes the screen for my processor comes up, sometimes not. Weird. I once got a prompt at startup to change the processor speed to a slower one, which I did just for the heck of it. It wasn't even a promp per se, but I got the point. I know this is incredibly long, but I wanted to include all the details because this is the craziest problem I've ever seen and I've had my fair share of computer problems. Nobody I know seems to know much about this and I refuse to take it to the shop yet....I would like to mention one last thing: when discussing this matter with friends, I have often been asked what processor I'm using. When I mention my AMD Athlon running with XP, I get a lot of negative feedback. This is news to me, but maybe It's just a piece of crap? I don't know. I had a nightmare with a Celeron a few years back so maybe this is just the upgraded nightmare-in-a-box. If you have any insight to this and I haven't lost you after the lenghty description, I'd appreaciate some advice.
