|
|
I have a cable modem and usually leave it connected all day but yesterday i noticed that my firewall was not in the taskbar so i went to switch it on and it would not activate.
I rebooted and was told i was not looged in as supervisor and could not activate it. I opened an account as the supervisor and inputed a password and the firewall was activated no problem .
But i noticed today that it was off again and nouthing i can do will start it.
I tried symantec support but i cannot access any page on their site.
Any help would be greatly apreciated.

Sounds like you've somehow let a gremlin through. Check your HOSTS file. You'll probably find that a whole bunch of Symantec websites (along with lots of other AV/AT/firewall vendors and Security Forums) are listed there. Remove those entries
That's only a temporary fix in all likelihood because the gremlin is most likely still on your system and will rewrite the hosts file at its first opportunity. If the firewall is being disabled, it's likely that whatever on-board AV software you own has now suffered the same fate. I would therefore recommend you run one of the online scanners, possibly the one at Symantec (virus scanner here, not a port scanner). This will take a good deal of time in all likelihood. Then, it will be time to run AdAware, SpyBot S&D, and finally HJT and look for anything suspicious.
Probably best to re-post in the Viruses, Worms, Trojans forum here. I would recommend the Spyware -- HiJackThis forum, but I think they're currently backlogged over there.

Use Start | Find (or Search | Files ... and search for "Hosts" . When you find the file, right-click on it and then select "Open with..." and enter "notepad.exe" . That will open the Hosts file, which is just a simple plain-text file. If you find a lot of lines in that file that reference Symantec (or any of a host of other anti-virus, anti-trojan, firewall, or anti-spyware websites or forums), delete those lines and then re-save the file and exit. You don't want to delete the whole file. Indeed, it's perfectly okay for the file to have no entries in it at all.

Sorry, we do tend to presume, at times. HJT is short for HiJack This!, sort of a last resort. Last resort to what, you ask. Well, there's lots of lists around, but I sort of like the one at http://www.dslreports.com/faq/8428 , (primarily because it's the first one in my favorites list and they've all been developed by pretty much the same group of people! )
