hey all... I'm kind of a wide-eyed virgin to this whole thing, so apologies if I inadvertantly break any of your rules or customs, or if my questions have been raised a million times before.

I just wanted to know if anyone could tell me why I can't open stuff like My Documents, Explorer, Control Panel, and other gear as well. I double-click on them and get the little hourglass dealie, but nothing happens.
Could there be something sinister behind that, or is it more likely that I've just done something dumb and cruel to my computer without realising it?

I'm guessing you'd probably need more information, but I have no idea what would be pertinent. So, if anyone has any suggestions, that would be cool... Oh, it's kinda newish, Win XP Home OS, McAfee Antivirus and Norton firewall (very expired)... just got Spybot, which picked up a bucketload of nefarious stuff...

Ok, that's about all I can think of. thanks.

Welcome.

We should start by having a look at your configuration please.

Download 'Hijack This!'. http://www.computercops.biz/downloads-file-328.html
Unzip (extract) it to a folder of its own. Then Doubleclick HijackThis.exe (in the new folder), and hit "Scan".
When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, then Ctrl-A to Select All, and copy its contents here. Most of what it lists will be harmless or even essential, don't fix anything yet.

Interesting stuff... I tried to read it, but my techno-dyslexia kicked in pretty quick. Hope it makes sense to you.
Thanks again.
