Hi All
I was thinking about trying Proxomitron and was wondering which program (on the Computer Cops download page) is the best one for beginners? Thanks for your help. |

Hi Shamash,
What you'll want is Nako 4.5, either the zip or exe version (I prefer zip). After you install it, you can grab the "Proxomitron EXE Unsupported Patch 4.5" if you want. The patch is a replacement proxomitron.exe that fixes some issues when chaining to other proxy's. Since that's something I never use, I haven't installed it.
As far as filter sets go, theres basically 3 options: Stick with the default filters, learn to write your own, or use someone elses filters. I like to write my own, but if your not inclined to or don't have the time, JD has a config set you can download & use, plus he has a forum here if you need more help.
No matter which route you go, I would recommend reading the help file & running the defaulf filters for a while till you get a feel for the program.
Once youv'e used proxo for a while, you'll wonder how you ever got along without it.
HTH

I like the exe version better. But which ever, I never got the unsupported patch for 4.5 either and you are not likely to need it
If you use the default filters, because Scott is no longer developing the program, those filters are a year old now and thus they are outdated in some ways. You will see the Google strip ads for instance. Now, you may want to just put up with a few ads (the vast majority will still be filtered) while you get the hang of Proxo and then come over to JD5000's forum here and I would suggest you perhaps use his basic filters at first and then move up to his extra config and eventually, if you want, to his advanced config. Plus, you may want to write your own...I haven't gotten to that point yet myself. Or you can come to this General Proxo forum and get a specific set of filters from a user who has written some to cover the Google strip ads and you can merge that set into the Proxo default filters you are using.
If you need help besides these two forums, my home site dslreports/broadband reports has lots of Proxo users and you can ask questions there in the Security and Software forums or run a search for threads...you will find a lot of them! |

Thanks for your answers Z12 & Mele20. I am now using JAP (anonymizing proxy) and would like to continuing to do so. So would you recommend i get the 'Proxomitron EXE unsupported patch 4.5' then to continue using JAP. Thanks again. |

If I recall correctly the reason for the unauthorized patch was precisely to fix a problem those using an anonymizing proxy had. So, yes, I believe you will need that patch. Someone else will probably be along who uses the patch and remembers better than I the history of why Scott issued that after declaring he was through developing Proxo. You could search dslreports (security and software forums) or here, around a year ago, and I know you will find posts about the reason for the unsupported patch. |

I wouldn't call it "unsupported"...
Hundreds, if not thousands, of Proxo users "support" the patch...
Scott himself could not support it because it was a "quick fix" to an issue that some (but not all) Proxo users specifically asked for... Scott, being unable to please "everyone", released one version for those that requested the 'fall-back' proxy feature, and one version for those that did not request that feature (ie, the "patch")...
The so-called-unsupported "patch" has been field tested by countless numbers of Proxo users - and we support it FULLY...
Having said all of that, if you use a proxy, then use the "patched" version - it has been field tested and it passes the tests of the most critical eyes out there... The word "authorized" versus "unauthorized" has nothing to do with anything other than Scott being forced at the time to release a "quick fix" that he himself was not given the time to fully test and validate... We, the critiquing Proxo community, has performed that test for him - and we fully support the stability of his 'quick fix' - the sign of a truly awesome programmer in that his quick fix has withstood the test of time and proved itself rock solid in stability and what-not... |

Well spoken - couldn't agree more. Should there still be concern, head over to P.I. for the details. |

Thanks everyone for all the great info/advice on Proxomitron. I'm really looking foward to learning how to use this fantastic piece of software. I realize there is a learning curve, but that has never stopped me before. I sorta feel like a kid at Christmas time just before opening his presents. |
