THERE ARE ALOT OF FOLKS IN NEED OF HELP.
I'VE NOTICED A FEW THAT ARE GETTING SUPPORT THAT DO NOT HAVE THE WINDOWS XP SERVICE PACK ONE INSTALLED.
ONE THAT I HAVE COMMUNICATED WITH INTIMATED THAT THERE WAS A PROBLEM WITH THEIR COPY OF WINDOWS, IT WAS "CRACKED".
IT ISNT FAIR TO THE OTHERS THAT ARE WAITING TO GET HELP TO HAVE ONE GRIPE GET IN THE WAY THAT IS BEING ATTENDED TO THAT IS GOING TO BE A CONTINUOS GRIPE BECAUSE AS SOON AS THEY GET THE THING FIXED AND GO BACK ON THE INTERNET THEY ARE GOING TO BE COMPROMISED AGAIN.
THOSE PEOPLE WITH "CRACKED"
COPIES OF WINDOWS ARE NOT ABLE TO DOWNLOAD THE SERVICE PACKS OR PATCHES BECAUSE MICROSOFT IS LOOKING FOR VERIFICATION OF THE AUTHENTICITY OF THE COPY THAT IS ASKING TO BE UPDATED AND WHEN THE "CRACKED" COPIES ARE DISCOVERED , THEN THEY ARE DENIED ACCESS TO THE UPDATE PRODUCT.
NO ONE BECAUSE OF RACE. COLOR .CREED. NATIONAL ORIGIN.SEXUAL ORIENTATION. HANDICAP. DISABLED OR ANY OTHER SUBSET SHOULD BE DENIED ACCESS TO ASSISTANCE AT THIS SITE.

THERE IS A PROBLEM THOUGH,
THE FOLKS IN POSSESSION OF "CRACKED" COPIES OF WINDOWS AND THAT KNOW THAT THEY HAVE A COPY OF WINDOWS THAT IS "CRACKED" NEED TO BE CONFRONTED.
CONFRONTATION IS PRODUCTIVE.
IT DOESN'T HAVE TO TAKE THE FORM OF ABUSE, I NEVER WOULD CONDONE THAT.
AND I WOULD NOT BE SYMPATHETIC TO ANYONE BEING ABUSIVE EITHER, BECAUSE EVEN THOUGH SOME OF THE FOLKS IN POSSESSION OF A "CRACKED COPY" KNOW THEY HAVE ONE; THERE ARE THOSE THAT AREN'T EVEN AWARE OF WHAT THAT MEANS.
THE SYMPATHIES THAT WE EXPRESS IN REGARDS TO THOSE IN POSSESION OF A CRACKED COPY SHOULD BE THAT; WE ARE SORRY THAT SOMEONE PERPETRATED THIS CRIME AND THAT YOU ARE A VICTIM WILLING OR UNWILLINGLY,BUT YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM THAT WE ARE ATTEMPTING TO ALLEVIATE HERE ON THE INTERNET.
AND THAT PROBLEM IS THE NURTURING OF VIRUSES, WORMS, AND OTHER PRODUCTS OF THE CRIMINALLY INSANE GENIUS THAT WRITES THIS TRASH.
AND BY YOU HAVING A CRACKED COPY OF YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM AND CONTINUING TO USE IT IN VIOLATION OF INTERNATIONAL COPYRIGHT LAWS AND JUST PLAIN GOOD COMMON SENSE AND MORALS, YOU ARE THE EXACT TYPE OF PERSON THAT THE INTERNET CRIMINALS ARE LOOKING TO USE TO RUN MALICIOUS CODE ON YOUR MACHINE TO COMPROMISE OTHER UNITS.

SO,
SHOULD WE ASK THEM TO KINDLY NOT POST A GRIPE UNTIL THEY CAN RETURN WITH A HIJACK LOG THAT INDICATES THAT THEY HAVE BOUGHT A NEW GENUINE COPY OF WINDOWS OF THEIR CHOICE AND THAT THE LOG INDICATES THAT THEY HAVE ALL THE LATEST SERVICE PACKS INSTALLED?

HOW DO WE HANDLE THAT?

FORMERLY SERIOUSLY COMPROMISED BY HIJACKERS AND THE LIKE: TMOV

Here is my suggestion:
when the first responder decides that they are up against the odds because the requesting person has a "cracked copy" of windows, the first responder should inform a moderator or a site admin. to intervene and inform the individual that they have a cracked copy of windows and that there is no way to make the installed copy safe to get on the internet.
and that they should do what is right and get rid of it and replace it with a genuine copy before returning to the site for assistance.
why?
because then the word will get out that it really is considered a serious matter to be in possession of a copy of windows that is a cracked copy.
and that the guys and gals at computercops are real professionals that won't sympathize with anyone using a cracked copy.

yes i know that it is in the A.U.P. but sometimes it takes extra effort and repeating to reinforce the position taken.

Umm...I really doubt people would admit to having a cracked copy in the first place. Not having XP SP1 does not indicate a crack either. We have no idea what's going out there, or even if their connection can stay intact to download the service pack. I also really doubt we can actualy convince anyone that cracks to buy a legitmate product.

To be more realistic, we should take steps to secure the person's computer as much as possible for whatever reason they can't download the service pack. For example, using an alternative browser like Oprea or Mozilla would cut down the risk grealtly. Of course the risk is still there as long as they don't patch but using IE on an insecure system is even worse. The addition of a firewall and updated virus scans, and improved security settings with the likes of Spywareblaster.

In a ideal situation we would get rid of cracks and such, but I'm just afraid it's not our place to enforce the law around here. We should discourage the use of cracks and delete any postings on those subjects, of course. I'd rather have an internet that is safer because it isn't infected by computers that have 60,000 malware programs spweing trojans everywhere.

i understand, i was making reference to an actual situation.
where they told me that they had a cracked copy and that they were afraid to go to windows for the download.
it's a frustrating thing to see someone trying to get it right and they were victimized by by some slick dealer of cheap pc's.
and I know that we're not the internet police too.
incidentally, I had to re-install my operating system yesterday and the hard copy of the windows update c/d rom????

that thing only partly works;you still have to go to windows update to get everything you need.

i don't know why microsoft even sent them out.

P.R. probably.

TMOV,

Cracked and Pirated copies of software are usually spotted on submissal of a HJT log. When these are picked out, they can and are dealt with in an appropriate manner.

A perusal of this sites AUP will show how such are matters are covered. This site, nor indeed no other responsible site, can be seen to be offering help and assistance in the matter of cracked, pirated or illegal software. Liken it to you offering to help let in a burglar at your neighbors property, if you will. It cannot and must not be seen to be done let alone actually be done.

Quote TMOV "RACE. COLOR .CREED. NATIONAL ORIGIN.SEXUAL ORIENTATION. HANDICAP. DISABLED OR ANY OTHER SUBSET SHOULD BE DENIED ACCESS TO ASSISTANCE AT THIS SITE."End quote.

Let assure you that this site operates no discriminatory policies whatsoever. Indeed, woe betide those who transgress this sites AUP and other policies in respect of this matter.

TMOV. State, National and International laws notwithstanding, the bottom line is this sites AUP, that is it. Period.
