|
|
Hi
I keep receiving spam where they have sent the e-mail to a random combination of letters @mydomain.co.uk. This means that I have to click 'OK' to the following message for each one, and it takes a long time to go through them all:
The target address is not known
Add "[email protected]" to the list of addresses that go to this account
Is there anything I can do to avoid this message?

Don't bother trying to bounce such messages. When you do so you're just attempting to send a bounce message saying "[email protected]" is a bad message. The spammers already know this.
At worst, your ISP may come down on you for generating messages that contain forged information. |

That sure doesn't sound like a message I've seen...
What version of mailwasher are you using and what type of account? POP, IMAP... |

It's not one I've ever seen, either, stan, but I can find the string "to the list of email addresses for theis account." in the code.
My guess is that the made up recipients are confusing bounce - since it's the feature that has a list of recipients (so bounce can make the appropriate bounce message if the receiving account is one that gets email forwarded from several other accounts).
I abandoned bouncing ages ago - so I don't wonder that I've never seen the message.

That might be the problem...
I have quit reading bounce threads here, if folks want to spam innocent folks with fake bounces I'm not interested in helping them.
I just don't see a real difference in some one who sends spam for profit and someone who resends the original spam to an innocent person for free as a fake bounce.
I manually report spam bounces sent to me to the senders abuse account with good results. I get really nasty if you bounce me a live virus... |

Folks who want to bounce SPAM, don't know any better. And why should they be expected to know better? The fact that FireTrust STILL advertizes the bounce feature as a SPAM reduction method doesn't exactly enlighten their users. Instead such MWP users innocently run into problems and we have to rudely give them the bad news. Not very responsible behaviour on the part of FireTrust.
Bad PR to boot, since users who have to be told by other users that the advertized benefits are bogus are going to be pissed with FireTrust.

When the folks that want to do the moral thing are dumped on by the marketing types with no ethics there is no form of input that is going to change things.
I'd hoped for better from the FireTrust leadership, it has been proven a false hope.
A simple statement "bouncing doesn't work anymore and is causing problems" should be enough to remove it from all future versions. A longer technical explanation of why bouncing spam to innocent folks is wrong could go in the FAQ or wherever. |

I didn't realise that bouncing wouldn't work in this situation, and will try just blacklisting and deleting instead.
However, if I tick the 'blacklist' box, it automatically ticks the bounce box. Is there a way to switch off the 'bounce' column in the program so I don't have to tick each one? |

First you have to disable the bounce at each account and each Spam Tool / filter that may have this feature enabled. Once that's done, untick the Bounce column checkmark at Tools > Options > Display tab > column area.

If you go to each mail account you have set up you can disable the bouncing there. Once you have done that you can remove the bounce column from the display by using the options menu. |
