I have been using the same version of Mailwasher since July 2002 and found it an excellent and indispensable tool in identifying and getting rid of unwanted email. Initially I have to admit I was bouncing the junk back but very quickly stopped shortly afterwards when I soon discovered that this simply generates more unnecessary traffic and returns the spam to hijacked addresses and not the spammers.
Since yesterday however I have been unable to delete any messages and it is making life extremely awkward as regards receiving genuine email.
I get the Message Exclamation:
Quote: |
Information stored about the current state of the mail account (eg, which messages it has), is out of date. Try again once the mail is reloaded |
In the Status bar the message is: Error: Mail must be refreshed
I have tried refreshing the mail and closing and rebooting the programme but it makes no difference. Sometimes it deletes one of the emails then the message appears as it tries to delete the second. When the mail is refreshed the apparently deleted email comes back again to haunt me along with all the others ........ and the number is growing .......
It has occurred to me that this may be a problem with the ISP but on reflection it doesn’t seem likely. It could be that "Spam" has suddenly found a way to get around Mailwasher but I also doubt this too .... despite the fact that these days even govt. agencies are hacking and playing around and not just the malicious virtual pests who get a kick out of sending junk mail all around the world.
I am using Mailwasher version 1.32 which probably seems out of the dark ages to anyone using the latest version but it works for me and I have never ever had any problems with it before.
If there is anyone out there who can help me sort out this glitch I would be really grateful.

That's an old version of MW that I really don't have a lot of knowledge about ... but I think I can go out on a limb here and say "Hardware breaks - Software doesn't" meaning "Since you've been using the same software for so long, it's not a program problem - but something else".
Two things are likely going on:
1) Your normal email client has snuck in while you were looking at the MW screens, has downloaded (and deleted mail).
2) Your ISP has changed software in their server.
The latter you won't have any control over - but the former you do if you make sure that your email client isn't set to auto download mail every so often.
Have you changed/added any programs recently (AV or different/newer email client.)
What happens when you do as MW directed: clear the mail grid then re-download the account(s)?

Your best bet is going to be by turnining on the extended logging under help about and trying to dig it out of there...
I'd get the 4.1 version (free) that comes with support here. I don't think your version is anymore. |

RogerW and Stan. Thanks for your suggestions. The problem has gone away. Here is what I did.
First I checked Outlook to see if it had started autodownloading - it hadn't -so I removed Mailwasher(MW) altogether and reloaded it, MW 1.32 that is, and my email accounts - it made no difference the error message kept coming up and I couldn't do anything with it. Then I downloaded MWpro and installed it - I was able to delete all the messages and there was no problem. Finally, out of curiousity, I removed MWpro and re-installed MW 1.32 and it works fine there are no error messages and I can delete etc. as before.
It might have been a problem with the ISP server software and the problem was resolved co-incidently while I was doing the above install / re-install etc as all this happened just after the long weekend. The ISP here in Hungary deletes most of the viruses from incoming mail before they send them on - No, I didn't ask them to do this they just do it anyway for everyone. It's a pity they don't delete all the spam too! I can see that some might regard this as an invasion of privacy but on the other hand ISPs also have a duty to their customers to keep viruses from infecting all their users and permutations of the Worm virus are everywhere. |
