why do i have many avchost applications in the task managaer ? why !?

A Description of Svchost.exe in Windows XP

If you go to this web page, you can find a list of all XP services and a description of them. In the table under process name you will find many that contain svchost.exe in that column, and a number that would access the internet. Just one example is the Automatic Updates service, which checks to see if there are any critical updates available for downloading:
