I'm running windows98SE with all current critical updates. Lately i started having problems with crashing and freezing. When I checked services running I found run32dll running twice. The last few days I also started getting winoldapp running 3 times, and I cant shut them down. When this happens, the system crashes and I get blue screen.
I have ran my antivirus (norton internet security and antivirus) as well as online antivirus (housecall), and both came clean of worms viruses and trojans.
Any ideas of what could be wrong.
Thanks for your help

Hi there,

Go to and download : HijackThis located at http://www.norbiesworld.co.uk/downloads/hijackthis.exe

Create and Unzip to a folder not your Desktop or the Temp folder, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

Most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, then copy and paste the contents of your Hijack This log here, and i'll tell you what to do.

Good Luck! Smile

hi there,

heres what you need to check in your hijackthis program, then click 'fix selected':

F1 - win.ini: run=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\cmmpu.exe

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {BCF96FB4-5F1B-497B-AECC-910304A55011} - C:\WINDOWS\NETI.DLL

O4 - Startup: NetAssistant.lnk = C:\Program Files\NetAssistant\bin\matcli.exe

O16 - DPF: {0E5F0222-96B9-11D3-8997-00104BD12D94} (sys Class) - http://www.pcpitstop.com/pcpitstop/PCPitStop.CAB

O16 - DPF: {1954A4B1-9627-4CF2-A041-58AA2045CB35} (Brix6ie Control) - http://ftp.coupons.com/v6/brix6ie.cab

O16 - DPF: {90C9629E-CD32-11D3-BBFB-00105A1F0D68} (InstallShield International Setup Player) - http://www.installengine.com/engine/isetup.cab

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\VxD\MSTCP: Domain = pppoedomain

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\VxD\MSTCP: NameServer = 192.168.2.1

when you have fixed those, you need to restart your computer in safe mode (do this by tapping f8 lots when your computer restarts)

when you are in safe mode, you must find these files and delete them:-

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\cmmpu.exe

C:\Program Files\NetAssistant\bin\matcli.exe

when you have deleted them, empty the recycle bin and restart your computer normally.

scan your computer again with hijackthis, and paste back a new log here.

i would also reccomend downloading spybot search and destroy AFTER you have done this, to clear up anything that was left. this can be downloaded from www.norbiesworld.co.uk/downloads/spybot.exe

good luck with all that! Smile
