|
|
I upgraded to 4.1 when notified (maybe a day or 2 later), and use AVG software from www.grisoft.com for virus protection. Around the same time as upgrading MW, I would have accepted AVG updates (automatic) and XP update patches (automatic). I also spent some time at a conference on a network, which settings I believe I have reversed.
However, now at bootup, the sysem pauses before MW and AVG start, and if I try to start MW, it says it is already running. I'm getting a message about the AVG core being missing, but if I move on, it is found, but the control centre has to be manually activated.
I have tried re-installing MW and AVG, separately and together, and even with both uninstalled, I still have the problem.
My instinct (27 years of IT, but not with op systems) says that it might be the 'improvement' in the MW boot that is at the bottom of this, but I can't get any further.
Anyone running this combination out there? |

Switch Mailwasher to manual starting to move it out of the boot time scramble to load everything and see if that helps.
If you get the already running from Mailwasher sometimes you can pop it up with the Ctrl-Shift-M hotkeys. |

Using the exact same combination without any such issues at all.

Tekguru, I just saw your post, after responding to the suggestion. Can you tell me what is in the registry against grisoft? I think its also possible that the problem is there, and that it hasn't loaded correctly. The entry looks wrong, but I'm on the free version and can't get tech support there.

reloading 4.0 did not solve the problem, neither did the manual start, or uninstalling AVG/MW or any combination. I can see ?? in the registry entries for AVG, so I suppose I need to edit that. ... or reinstal XP? |

Just to let you know that the problem was definitely not a MW problem in the end. I downloaded the free trial of AVG v7, and the instal has removed all the ?? in the registry for the free version, and the laptop boots correctly now. I'm hoping that if I decide not to keep v7, the free version will instal ok next time round. |
