i dont know what happened to my computer but windows won't start anymore. i Just downloaded ad-aware from its offical website and then prefromed a complete scan, the results were suprisning, it found so many infected files although i have spybot, the ceaner, bazooka and the x-cleaner. so i checked all of them and accepted to remove them. finally, the program asked me to restart the computer and i did. but unfortunatly windows would not that start anymore, it just load my wallpaper without any files and then it goes back to the user slection ( u know the blue screan in windows xp) knowing that i only have one user account on that computer and its mine. last thing to know is that right now im using my laptop.

so waiting for your response!!!!

A repair should fix it:
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Or, when booting, tap F8, choose - last good known configuration

el_maz, I'm right there with ya! I have the same exact problem and haven't fixed it yet. What kind of a computer do you have? I have a Sony VAIO and their support sucks so bad. I called them and the only option they gave me was recovery. I hate them so much.

Right now I'm scrambling to find some way to back up my data in case I have to do the recovery. Not fun.

i got it at last, after several attempts to fix it i finally got the right way!!
just go to another computer with win xp installed and then copy his userinit.exe from c:\windows\system32 to a flopy disk
and then go back to your computer and start the recovery console then copy the userinit.exe from the flopy disk to your windows\system32 and overwrite the existing one
finally rename it to wsaupdater.exe
there you gooooooooooo

magictouch, I did the repair install, but now when Windows is booting up an error message flashes up saying something about "not enough virtual memory" and the computer automatically shuts down and reboots. It keeps doing the samething over and over in a loop until I manually shut it down. Safe mode does the same thing, as well as safe mode with command prompt.

Any idea how to fix this?

candi7of9> If you can boot to safe mode-F8
Check your Pagefile.
. Set A Static Page File Size
Virtual Memory acts like a second source of RAM. When you run low on Physical RAM your PC uses an allocated space on your hard drive to increase memory. Virtual Memory is much slower than Physical RAM. Windows XP is set to use a dynamic Page File that will resize during system operation consuming resources. A good rule of thumb is to set the minimum and maximum to 1.5 times the amount of Physical RAM you have. This works well as long as the 1.5 total is not greater than 256MBs. Any larger and it might even slow your system down. If you have over 256MB of RAM set the page file to 256MB.

Tweak - Go to "Start", "Settings", "Control Panel", "System", "Advanced" Tab, in the "Performance" section select "Settings", "Advanced" Tab, in the "Virtual Memory" section select "Change", change the "Initial Size" and "Maximum Size" to the same size then select "Set" and "OK".

Notes - If you are getting low memory errors then you need to add more RAM to your PC. Increasing the Page File to accommodate the low memory situation should only be considered a temporary solution. Using additional Virtual Memory over System RAM will reduce performance. It is a good idea to have at least 512MB-1GB of RAM in a PC today. A simple test to determine if you need more RAM is to use you PC for a whole day without rebooting, then look at the Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Delete), Performance tab. If the "Commit Charge - Peak" is ever higher then the "Physical Memory - Total" your system could benefit from adding more RAM.

magictouch: Safe Mode isn't working either. I'm going to try to do a repair again, we'll see what happens. And it can't be that I inherently need more memory, because we've had XP on this computer since we got it and it's only after running the repair that I'm getting this error.

For now I'm still locked out, so I can't make any changes. Crying or Very sad
