|
|
Dear all,
My organisation is trying to develop a set of internal routines for file naming and -storage, which includes use of file metadata that will allow effective search of files on our Windows hard drives and servers. This question relates to the using right-click > 'properties' functionality on WinXP:
1. Is there any way 'custom' and 'summary' information specified for files on the XP platform can be used by normal users when performing file searches? This would potentionally be a valuable tool to use for files that are shared.
2. Does anyone know of good sources of (non-expert) info on this functionality?
Cheers,
mgl. |

sorry , i read it 5 times but dont really get your question, well english is not my mothertongue maybe uts that.
you want user to see more or less when they right click for properties.
and you want this after they did a file search ( F3) ?
or you want the user only to see files alowed to be seen by you, when they do a search ?
for this kind of stuf i mostly find a solution in the microsoft development part : http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/defau...d=28000524

Helpless,
Sorry if I was not clear enough - maybe it's because I'm not really sure what it is I'm trying to do
Essentially, I'm trying to find a way of using metadata attributes in WinXP (as can be specified under 'Custom' and 'Summary' if one right-clicks a file) as tools to assist more effective cataloguing and searching of files.
In the absence of a more advanced file management system (or the funds to get one), having this ability would greatly help us in organising and naming files and folders on our (Windows) network. For example, I would like to be able to give a file a simple and logical name (eg. such as file_summary_winXP.doc) and then be able to specify further details (details on authors and editing, responsibilities, categories etc.) regarding this file through the 'hidden' metadata. But for this to be useful I need to be able to use the metadata while searching.
So my question is; is there any way the metadata can be used for searching using only the functionality in WinXP (i.e. without any additional server applications)?
Thank you and apologies for my ignorance
Ps. Thanks for the link, Helpless - I will do some searching when time allows! |

hmm not an easy one here,
the maximum i know that can be used to get info on a file is opening your windows explorer and at the TAB containing the name (the tab you use for sorting the files by alphabet) you just right click and you will see what you can get.
now to make th list longer most of the programs who do that are going to cost you money so.... solution would be at the registry but no idea how to go on that.
sorry
