After much back and forth on the ZoneAlarm Community, and a bunch of trial and error, it APPEARS that port 110 shows up as stealth on Steve Gibson's ShieldsUp at http://www.grc.com/ if you make a PROGRAM (nor firewall) expert rule for Benign which says
Name: POP3 server
Rank: 1
Action: Allow
Source: My Computer
Destination: The IP address of your POP3 server
Protocol: POP3
If anyone comes up with anything better, please let me know.

I run B9 and Norton Internet Security 2003 which includes nav. with windows 98se
NIS firewall has the option to 'stealth protect' ports, which seems to be quite efficient. I run port security checks from time to time online at Symantec security Response.
So far no problems at all with B9 since install early July. |

If you're using Norton Personal Firewall right click on your NPF tray icon and select "options", then click on the "Firewall" tab and go down to the HTTP port list dialog box, from there, enter your 110 and 1025 ports into the list.
I have done this and scans from both the Steve Gibson website AND Symantec reveal ALL ports are hidden from online probes...hope this helps coz nobody here seems to help us NPF users!  |

Well...seems I was a bit too hasty there...and beginning to see why NPF is held in such low esteem here!
Check out this statement from Symantec concerning configuring NPF 2003 to "stealth" ports:

Hmmmm... 
maybe it's time to ditch NPF in flavor of something else...ZoneAlarm seems to be popular, maybe I'll give it a "whirl". |
