Greetings o brave paladins

I've been watching you and watching data entering my computer through internet. Yes, it's so slow I can even watch it walking and waving.

My current reports: no more BSOD, no more intrusion messages (actually the firewall seems dead), but everything still sloooow, many pictures are not loaded in IE, and a new thing I noticed: WMP only receives streaming audio and video if NPF2002 is disabled.

About the new breakthroughs: I have disabled Privacy Control, but couldn't see any difference.

About SNDMON.EXE... is it safe to remove it from startup even if I'm still using NPF, or it's a corrective measure only for users who already uninstalled it?

Is there anything else I forgot to try? Too many threads, hard to catch everything that was mentioned.

I was kidding about moving to ZA, too curious to quit now. We keep sharing the agony

Cheers

Negatory; negatory Break away! That is not the file required for Win 9x/ME users who've downloaded LiveUpdates post-May 12 2004. This file (whatever it is and I do not recognize the build at all) cannot possibly be the file required for post-May 12 Win 9X/ME LiveUpdates to NIS/NPF 2002.

The Redirector Update that first incorporated symids did not even exist prior to early March 2004 under any circumstances. Prior to that symids hooked to a different part of NIS/NPF 2002.

A slipup on my part. Amongst several versions, a bad version sliped in. Here is the REAL version. I have subsequantly withdrawn my errored version and replaced it with the correct one.

This version is GENIUNE for NIS 2002 US ENGLISH for use on Windows 98/98SE.

I am going to see if the French Canadian version is the same.

Again, sorry to all.

Just for additional information, the initial version was a true symids.vxd, however delivered with Norton AntiSpam 2004. Thus, it was not a virus but simply the wrong version. For those who tried it, simply writeover with the new offering.

Just to answer my own question and leave a piece of information for future generations:

About the Windows Media Player having problems with streaming audio when using NPF, I've found this article with a proposed solution:

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/ni...30636?Open

I just couldn't try it yet, will do it as soon as I get home.

I know this information is not relevant to this topic, but I thought it was when I first asked about it. So I'm just filling the blank I created myself here. Please feel free to quote it in a more appropriate topic if needed.

Hey Everyone who has/had NIS 2002 Problems: Thanks to JV Morris and Sonofjay who pull all the info together and came up with a fix to the problem. I finally readied myself to apply Sonofjay's solution and went ahead and downloaded the offending update that caused my slow down problem in the first place. To my surprise.....no slow down symptoms at all this time. I checked my "symids.sys" file per Sonofjay's direction and it did not get deleted as before. I believe perhaps Symantec fixed the problem and due to embrassments caused by its initial Live Updates, they slipped the file back in quietly in its latest Live Laughing Updates. No fix was required and all system run smoothly. Glad this is over after almost a month of hard work from everyone involved. Regards, astroc Laughing

Cannot access the Internet after obtaining the Symantec Redirector update on or before May 13, 2004 (Windows 2000/XP)

Situation:
You ran LiveUpdate on or before May 13, 2004 and received the 5.3.1 Symantec Redirector update. After you restart the computer, you cannot connect to the Internet.

Solution:
This problem occurred because of a problem with the update as it was released at that time. The update has been repaired. Run LiveUpdate again.

If you are running Windows 2000/XP, you need to restart the Symantec Network Driver service; otherwise, you must uninstall and reinstall Norton Internet Security.

To restart the Symantec Network Driver service

On the Windows taskbar, click Start > Run.
In the Run dialog box, type services.msc
Click OK.
Locate the Symantec Network Driver service.
Right-click this service, and then click Properties.
Do one of the following:
If the startup type is Manual, change it to Automatic, click OK, and restart the computer.
If this does not resolve the problem, then uninstall and reinstall Norton Internet Security.
If the startup type was already Automatic, then uninstall and reinstall Norton Internet Security.

To uninstall and reinstall Norton Internet Security
Read the document Uninstalling and reinstalling Norton Internet Security or Norton Personal Firewall 2004.

Only problem is that the LiveUpdate was not repaired. See the results of an absolute fresh install at http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/r...~mode=flat late on 3 June.

Following up with a comment from Reese Anschultz, earlier on 3 June 2004 at and my more detailed response later on 4 June (after I finally woke up) at http://www.broadbandreports.com/forum/r...~mode=flat .
