I have Noton Antivirus 2003. I have heard a lot of good things about AVPE. Should I make the switch, and if so, would I uninstall Norton Antivirus in order to do so?
Thanks for any help you have.

Are you having problems with Norton 2003 or is the license gonna expire soon? If not, I suggest you stick with Norton since you did pay for it ( I assume). If you do make the switch, then I would uninstall norton before installing AVPE( just a suggestion).

Thanks very much for your reply. I think I might as well stick to Norton. If there are any major problems with it, then I'll probably switch.

Thanks again.

Hi sweet_g!

You can do both but all the conservative types will think you're nuts. Just disable Norton's RealTimeMonitor and autoupdate features. Install AVPE and use its RTM. As long as you don't install them in the same folder, there should not be any conflicts. I know the experts at AVPE say that you should not do that but I have been using two AVs for many years online. One as primary with RTM, the other as a backup scanner only. The primary runs at startup. The backup does not. You have to check your startup folder to be sure.

I have run Norton 2002 as primary and AVPE as backup and in reverse. No problems. I did eventually uninstall Norton. I never have more than two AVs on my box at a time.

I started doing this after I had my one and only AV die and I had to go online without one so I could get another one. Not fun.

If you try it this way and you develop conflicts then uninstall one (the backup) and see if the conflicts go away. Another way is to make a backup copy of the install file on a CD, in case you need it later.

It's up to you. Whatever you prefer. Very Happy

i like my zone alarm firewall and my grisoft.com AVG V.7.0
AND AVG HAS BECOME 2ND ONLY TO NAV IN OUR OWN POLLS HERE.
AVG HAS BEEN GIVING AWAY THE V.6.0 FOR A LONG TIME.
lately they just began allowing a free thirty day trial of their v.7.0
i posted the download in our download section.
it's the favorite of mine.

Thanks Prince_Serendip & TMOV for your replies. I never expected to get so many responses (yeah 3 is a lot 4 me...lol). I'm still not sure what I'm gonna do yet, but thanx for the suggestions.
I've tried AVG, but took it off since I didn't want to run both my AV's at the same time, but with Prince_Serendip's suggestion, I may be able to try it again or any other, while my other AV is sorta disabled.

Well thanx you guys, you've been a real help.

Also if you want another choice to have as a back-up to NAV 2003, AntiVir or another AV you could try bitdefender (free edition) which is an on-demand scanner only. This way it won't interfere with another AV resident scanner.

Success is also a magnet. All the members who contribute their time, money and/or energy here are successful at what they do and so too then is this board. Thumbs Up

Why do things seem so much worse than a couple years ago on the Internet? Realize that back then there were about 350 million PC's on it. Now it's getting closer to a billion! In addition to PC's, there are cellphones, iPods, Palms, pagers etc. It's no wonder there are more problems!

I've decided to do whatever I can to help make it better, even if it's only a drop in the ocean. Wink

Thanks for all of your guys' help. I just felt that I needed another AV/virus scanner when I used the Panda scan and it found about 10 trojans that my Norton AV didn't even detect. As of yet, the bitdefender has not detected anything. So that's either good or bad...lol. Well, if it's not working I could always try AVPE or AVG. Just one quick question...How do i disable Norton's RealTimeMonitor??

THANKS EVERYONE FOR ALL OF YOUR HELP, YOU GUYS R THE BES'

Check your startup list via start>run>msconfig>OK. Be sure that Norton/Symantec does not load at startup. Then make sure bitdefender does.

To use Norton as a backup scanner, locate the main folder and find the primary exe file for the program. It should say "Application" on the right beside it but there may be several. It will also have an icon on the left. Pick the one with the most bytes. (Don't worry if you get the wrong one at first. Just toss the icon in your recycler and try again.) Right click on it to create a shortcut. Drag the shortcut to your desktop. Alternatively, if you already have a Norton icon on the desktop, right click it to see where it points. If it points to the primary exe then just keep using it.

When you use it as a backup scanner it may give you a box about loading the RTM. Just click no or cancel. If you need more help, we are here.
