|
|
I've been using Mailwasher for a while to preview emails from two separate accounts - no problem. Recently upgraded to 4.1.
Of late when I open Mailwasher it does what it's supposed to with the first account (Freeserve) and then starts on the second one (Claranet) but just grinds to a halt after showing the first message (or sometimes the second one). I get a message saying Claranet disconnected. If I quit Mailwasher and open Outlook Express I can immediately download all the waiting messages witout a problem.
Where should I be looking for solutions? |

Hi JIP - I've had the same problem with Claranet for about a week. Haven't worked out what it is yet as I'm not too savvy with headers (if that's the problem). Do you have auto-delete enabled on any of your spam tools in MW? Lets hope the Firetrust chaps can help - what with this and the Hotmail problem, MW is choking on my PC.

Several problems of that nature have, in fact, been traced back to inline virus scanners. Certain types of information content (not necessarily viruses - more like poorly formatted spam) make them 'abort' emails before the actual end of the email is sent to MW.
The long you experience is MW waiting for more of the email (there's aparticular character sequence that signals the end). After a while with no activity, the connection is terminated.
Many email programs seem to handle this fairly gracefully, but MW isn't quite as forgiving.
The firetrust guys have documented the problem and sent some reports off to the virus scanner makers affected....but that doesn't help with your immediate problem.
The formatting problems seem to come in waves (apparently with a particular spam campaign or similar thing.) They might subside soon.
What you can do is either temporarily turn off email scanning for your virus scanner to see if it solves the problem. If it does, then you'll know for sure the scanner is the problem.
Depening upon what scanner you use and how clever you are, it may be possible to circumvent scanning when MW fetches mail and leave scanning in place when you use your email client.

Well thanks for an intelligible reply. I'll try your suggestions. |
