I know Harley-Davidson only has two wheels but.........

Ian Mutch celebrates the revivified Harley-Davidson motorcycle on the occasion of its 100th birthday
Wednesday July 9, 2003
When you back an outsider you develop an affection for it, and when that outsider comes through, the buzz is so much the sweeter.
Back in the early 80s Harley-Davidson was on the rocks, an industrial relic abandoned by all but the incurable die-hards clinging to an American dream that could not live among the hi-tech competition from Japan. Then something happened. Harley-Davidson produced the Evolution engine. It was well named. It did not leak oil, it did not break down and was the first of the Milwaukee v-twins to arouse no interest from seismic geologists in search of the ultimate shake. Harley-Davidson had at last produced a motorcycle that 20th century man - and, significantly, woman - could live with and cross continents on without a support truck, oil tanker and orthopaedic surgeon in tow.
Reliability and comfort by themselves, however, would not have assured the monumental success that the motor company has achieved since the inception of the Evolution engine. Personality, mystique and marketing have done that but, without the mechanical enhancements, the hype alone could never have worked. The fact is that modern Harley-Davidsons are damn good bikes and the latest Twin-cam engine has taken the Evolution process further with a torquey power plant that launches the rider forward with a uniquely Harley grunt.( Guardian Unlimited © Guardian Newspapers Limited 2003)
