I am also in the mid of AV evaluation. I don't care much of the cost but:
1) Care a lot on performance (I hate Norton product which slow down my P4 1.7MHz a lot.)
2) Serious about configures / setting up the AV software the way I want it to go. Preferbly one which can let user save "Profile" and restore/transfer.
3) After sale service, preferbly a forum set up by the AV producer, besides the conventional services and supports. (I have not found one, do you?)
One big headache I am having is I can't claim back(whatever resource grasp by AV) if I go off-line. Is there any AV software that can be easily "QUIT" at any point of time (If I decided to do so)?

I am now using NOD32 but I was wondering if Avast is better. I know Avast has IM protection so thats why I want to get it. Should I stay with NOD32 or switch to Avast? |

Hello hclass,
Not much to configure with anti-virus programs - pretty much limited to what to scan, when to scan, and when to update.
If you want to have the AV program scan your email, check to see that it is compatible with your email client.
Avast has a forum. |

Since downloading Avast I am very pleased with it. Norton never seemed to catch anything and so far Avast has discovered two! It does an automatic update every day. |

As others, I am also more confused than informed.
I have uses NAV for about 4 years and currently have version 2003 and need to upgrade in July. First of all, each version of NAV eats up more resources, slows down my processor, and basically takes over functions (like dialing up my modem for no reason at all) I would just as soon do myself. By disabling certain startup features, I can get by, but basically it is like a big virus sitting in the background doing nothing.
I have complained to Symantec and get nothing but nerdy answers or no answers at all. Now, the live update sits and says "checking subscription service" and will NOT do a live update even though I have 2 months left! I HATE SYMANTEC AND NAV!!!!
So what are my best options? I will switch to anything as long as it does not gobble up all my system resources (450 mHz processor with 256 mBytes RAM and Windows 9. Also, is there any antivirus software that removes spybots. These weasels are as bad as viruses and my son picks up about 30-40 of them everytime he uses P2P networking. |

well
i have the AVG V.7.0 FROM GRISOFT DOT COM ON MY PC AND I HAVE NEVER FELT LIKE IT WAS INTRUSIVE AND IT HASN'T LET ME DOWN.
I CAN DO AS I DO WHICH IS NEVER LET THE THING DIAL OUT.
BECAUSE I HAVE TRAINED MYSELF TO BE DISCIPLINED TO CALL FOR A N UPDATE EVERY TIME I SIT DOWN AT THIS PC.
OR I CAN LET IT UPDATE ITSELF.
YOU CAN GET THE FREE VERSION FROM AVG.COM.
IT IS THEIR VERSION6.0.
IT HAS THE SAME VIRUS DEFINITIONS AS V.7.0,
BUT LESS AVAIL FUNCTIONS ON THE FREE VERSION.
TRY IT OUT AND SEE IF IT IS THE ONE FOR YOU.
JUST DON'T HAVE TWO RUNNING AT THE SAME TIME.

Well, I am not an expert in the field of AV, but I have noticed a couple of things:
1) The free AV's you can download or run from the internet are **FREE**. I'm cheap, so free is good, 'specially if it works (gotta save my money for those MMPORPGs!).
1a) Since they are free, I take one point in time during the week, usually on a Friday, and I go through and scan with Panda Activescan *and* RAV *and* AVG, so that the multiple redundancy will hopfully make a pretty tight net to catch those nasty little critters.
2) Because Norton and McAfee are the best known and publicized AV's out there, people have begun to write viruses that specifically target them to shut them off (experts, please feel free to jump in here and slap me down if I'm wrong...) before wreaking havoc with your system. I am of the mind that by usng lesser known software, this will be less of a problem.
Still though, I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop, and have these companies start using obnoxious pesterware to get us to buy their stuff (ala Norton). For now though, I am content.
