But you ran it on Win98. We need to see a log from WinXP please.
Were you able to get a log on XP? And which steps did you take? I need you to please follow up in your posts when I make suggestions. Let me know what you did and what the results were. Without that information, I can't help.

You need the newer version of HijackThis. It can be found on this page:

I was in XP when i ran HijackThis... perhaps i've copied the wrong log over, the old one. Sorry, i didn't notice that said Win98. I'll go back to XP and find the correct one.

Again, did you do the sfc /scannow? I really have to ask you again to let me know which of my suggestions you had tried and the results. Otherwise I am not going to be able to judge the situation.

For XP you sure don't have many running services. Plus the runkey entries look a lot different than they did before. Something is not right.

Let's clean out the Spyware and then have you reboot.

C:\Documents and Settings\Lyn\Desktop\HijackThis.exe DO not run hijackthis from the desktop. You are still running an older version of HijackThis. Please update it.

Close All Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer Windows. Select the following items and Fix:[b]

------------------------------

Empty your Temporary Internet Files and history in Internet Options. And clean out your
%Userprofile%\Local Settings\Temp
folder. It's a good idea to do that regularly.

Restart the computer even though you may not need to. I want to clear the cobwebs. How does it run now?

Post a new HijackThis log please.

I tried running SFC/SCANNOW when you originally suggested it but it wouldn't run at that stage. However, it finally has now. What results should i have seen? All I noticed was there was no data in the Event Viewer.

Before running the latest version of HijackThis i removed those files you listed, although some of them were no longer present. Then i ran the new HijackThis. My XP is still in Safe Mode, by the way.

Have you tried to run HijackThis on your XP in regular mode yet?

Sfc /scannow Checks any protected Files and replaces corrupt or missing files.

Press CTRL + ALT + DEL to bring up Task Manager. Click the processes tab and

find this entry:

mwsoemon.exe

Highlight it and click the end process button.
DElete this folder:
C:\PROGRAM FILES\MYWEBSEARCH

Select the following items in HijackThis and press Fix checked:[b]
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Tweak UI] RUNDLL32.EXE TWEAKUI.CPL,TweakMeUp This is not the TWEAKUI for Windows XP There is another version made for XP

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MyWebSearch Email Plugin] C:\PROGRA~1\MYWEBS~1\bar\1.bin\mwsoemon.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Network Daemon for Win32] netd32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MessengerPlus2] "C:\Program Files\Messenger Plus! 2\MsgPlus.exe"
O4 - Global Startup: Microsoft Office.lnk = C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office10\OSA.EXE

Log off and back on to Windows.

Run HijackThis again and post the new log.

To review, you have had some improvement. What is the exact situation now please?

After you make these changes, try the Internet for a while and let me know how it behaves.

The fact that this entry has returned is a problem and you tried to delete the file and said you couldn't find it.
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Network Daemon for Win32] netd32.exe

Please reset your search settings again and see if you can find netd32.exe
If you do find it, delete it.
Open Folder Options>view and check your settings:

Select
Show hidden files and folders

Display the contents of system folders

Uncheck: Hide protected operating system files

Next go to Search and scrolldown using the scroll bar on the right. Go down to More advanced options and click.

Be sure the first three boxes are selected:
Search System folders
Search Hidden Files and folders
Search SubFolders

Because XP will not always show you hidden files by default.

Yhe situation at the moment, before trying your latest suggestions, is that i have not been using XP except to run the tests. I did notice that whenever opening up notepad it seemed to default to being minimised... i had to maximise it each time to open it up. I'll see what happens after making these latest changes.

I did everything you said.
I'm posting the new scan below.
XP is running OK except for monster.com pop-up with Internet Explorer.
Notepad is still not automatically maximising.

I don't see any spyware there. Is this a regular pop up?
Have a look at this page and compare to see if this is Messenger Spam. Not Instant Messenger, but a service named Messenger running on your computer.

http://www.techtv.com/screensavers/answ...42,00.html

Did you install this on purpose?

In addition, let's get you some protections. Did you do the repair install? If so you need to get over to Windows Update first thing .

Here is an excellent source for tips to tighten security. Follow the advice and get the free downloads to help avoid some of these problems in the future.

Thanks again for the help. I have copied the info about turning off Messenger service.. i'm sure that's the problem because that monster.com only pops up when i first go to IE home page.

The Java client i installed on purpose but it hasn't worked in the past week. If it's still faulty i will remove it because i have PIRCH and MIRC anyway.

Since i got rid of Zone Alarm i will have to get another firewall.

And yes, i did repair install, so i will go to Windows Update.

Do you have any idea why Notepad is not opening up prooerly?

Thanks very much.

Does this happen when you open a text file?
If you go to the start menu to programs>accessories and click the notepad shortcut what happens?

Take care of windows Updae first. Get the DCOM RRPC vulnerability patch first and install it. Then come back to Widows Update for the rest.

Post a new log after yo do that please. I want to be sure you haven't picked up anything while you weren't patched. This is extremely important. Do not wait one more second. Get the DCOM patch please.
