Norton Internet Security 2002

Greetings o brave paladins

I've been watching you and watching data entering my computer through internet. Yes, it's so slow I can even watch it walking and waving.

My current reports: no more BSOD, no more intrusion messages (actually the firewall seems dead), but everything still sloooow, many pictures are not loaded in IE, and a new thing I noticed: WMP only receives streaming audio and video if NPF2002 is disabled.

About the new breakthroughs: I have disabled Privacy Control, but couldn't see any difference.

About SNDMON.EXE... is it safe to remove it from startup even if I'm still using NPF, or it's a corrective measure only for users who already uninstalled it?

Is there anything else I forgot to try? Too many threads, hard to catch everything that was mentioned.

I was kidding about moving to ZA, too curious to quit now. We keep sharing the agony

Hey Joseph..astroc here...I checked mine and my msvcrt.dll is version 6.1.9844.0
Remember I still havent updated the last two Security updates that caused my system slow down. I am running NIS 2002 W2k Sp4 IE 6...Regards, astroc

Just for additional information, the initial version was a true symids.vxd, however delivered with Norton AntiSpam 2004. Thus, it was not a virus but simply the wrong version. For those who tried it, simply writeover with the new offering.

Just to answer my own question and leave a piece of information for future generations:

About the Windows Media Player having problems with streaming audio when using NPF, I've found this article with a proposed solution:

I know this information is not relevant to this topic, but I thought it was when I first asked about it. So I'm just filling the blank I created myself here. Please feel free to quote it in a more appropriate topic if needed.

Hey Everyone who has/had NIS 2002 Problems: Thanks to JV Morris and Sonofjay who pull all the info together and came up with a fix to the problem. I finally readied myself to apply Sonofjay's solution and went ahead and downloaded the offending update that caused my slow down problem in the first place. To my surprise.....no slow down symptoms at all this time. I checked my "symids.sys" file per Sonofjay's direction and it did not get deleted as before. I believe perhaps Symantec fixed the problem and due to embrassments caused by its initial Live Updates, they slipped the file back in quietly in its latest Live Laughing

Updates. No fix was required and all system run smoothly. Glad this is over after almost a month of hard work from everyone involved. Regards, astroc Laughing

This solution was found on Symantecs online support pages and it worked when I uninstalled and re-installed NIS !! About time to have an solution !! Very Happy

What I'm intrigued about is that my cable internet is sooooooooooooo slow one day then the next day it's back to normal??
In fact I think it was even slower than dial up yesterday Crying or Very sad
