|
|
Hi! I hope I'm posting in the right forum! Plus I'm afraid and hoping my computer doesn't get kaput again in the meantime!
the problem I'm having is -- on Wednesday evening, everything was working fine when all of a sudden the screen went black and the system rebooted again. this happened about 3-4 times after which the error message appeared - windows cannot start the following file is missing or corrupt - the file being system32/drivers/pci.sys
I'm using windows xp pro. After that I tried reformatting the whole thing again. At first just as I started with the installation, it came up with a blue screen and an error message - error in some line. (i don't exactly remember what -- sorry!). So I shut it down and started again... it let me reformat the whole thing. then it worked fine for a while. and now again the same thing happened!
i let it be for a while, then switched it on again... and again it started working fine. and now I'm sort of scared hoping it does not go beserk till I get some help from you guys maybe... Can Anyone help me?
Also, I'm a novice in puter related stuff... so please keep that in mind!
thanks, Juhi
P.S. and no the reset buttons etc. are not pressed... |

Hi Juhi,
Did you upgrade to Windows XP? Or was it preinstalled when you purchased the computer?
P.S. If you upgraded what was the previous version you upgraded from?
Cheers!

Hi, No No Upgrade. it was preinstalled. Had it when my hard disk crashed in September 2002. Got everything changed (including motherboard) then and Windows XP Pro was installed. However, Recently (Dec.18th to be precise) 'puter was beginning to act very slow plus it seemed there was a worm there too, so reformatted and re installed the whole thing....
thanks. |

Hey,
Ok, go to >Start\Run> and type the following in the Run dialog box: eventvwr
When a page comes up, click on System, in the left pane. and find an error message source of "save dump"
Look for this in the time and date that the reboot occoured.
And write down what that error message says including all numbers.
I dont know if I explained the instructions very well.(I was never good at that)
Hope you can find that.

hi, I found save dump... but how do I find error message source!?!
is this what you mean -
The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck. The bugcheck was: 0x1000008e (0xc0000005, 0x00690074, 0xf485ec80, 0x00000000). A full dump was not saved.
thanks!! |

Hello,
I dont quite understand your question.(how do I find error message source?)
But if you can make the system reproduce the error meesage, with the blue screen, (The error message you didnt remember in the first forum post you did.) If you can get that to happen again, then write down what that blue screen says.
But first make sure you do the steps below:
Disable Auto reboot
1. Right Click My computer and hit properties
2. Go to Advanced
3. Under the Startup and Recovery section, click Settings...
4. Under System Failure UN-check "Automatically restart.
Also perform this step:
Write debugging information.
1. Right Click My computer and hit properties
2. Go to Advanced
3. Under the Startup and Recovery section, click Settings...
4. Under Write Debugging Information. On the scroll down menu, select "Small Memory Dump".
Then write down any information, or error messages that come up.
Also try to keep alert about what you are doing, when it resatarts automatically.
You may also want to visit this website, for a little help:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/...ot.asp#TSE
Then post as detailed report as you can.
P.S> If anyone else has iformation on this, please post!

You can also use the Dr. Watson tool, it may say something.
To start Dr. Watson:
Click >Start\ Run> and type: drwtsn32.exe
Make sure you have the latest Windows Updates installed.

hello, it seems this problem is getting worse, other people are having it too! at first i thought it might be a heat problem, but maybe it's a worm that no AV can find?
I hope you can figure it out!
good luck!

Hey Bofotheclown,
Are you the same person that posted the first message?
How about you post your HijackThis (HJT) log, in this thread please, so we can see if you have viruses, or are being hijacked.
> Download HJT here....
http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis.zip
> Then Unzip it to C:\
> Open HJT and hit "Scan" it will only take a second to scan.
> Then the "Scan" button turns to "Save log" hit that and save the log.
> The log will automatticaly popup after saveing.
> Copy all the contents from the log and paste them here.
Thanks

known problem.
your cpu temereture might be too high. Is yor CPU fan running properly ? The error caused by high temperstur can be tricky to understand.
Use a fan with the right capasity and monitor the temperatur.
There could be a bad memmory chip too. Try to change. |

|
|
I've been watching this thread as I've been having over two weeks of unexpected restarts. The system would settle down and be OK for a couple of days and then start acting up again.
The reboots got more frequent the last few days.
When I finally replaced my lightweight power supply with a new heavy duty model the system stabilized and is now purring contentedly.
Just one persons solution.

|
|
I was also having this problem. I was not doing anything at the time. I had left the computer running while I went to sleep and I could hear the hard drive click (same click you hear when it stops spinning when you shutdown) and then the system would shutdown and reboot itself.
I shut it off after about five times doing this and when I rebooted this morning, I searched the web for solutions, found this site and tried some of the things in this thread.
I was having heat problems as well a few weeks ago, so I had removed the side panel from the CPU. I recently put it back on to dull the noise. Wehn I took the panel off this morning, the primary CPU fan was not spinning. I touched it with my finger and it began again. Seems to me that it was the over heating causing the restart. I've been up for 20 minutes without a problem now and no odd sounds from the hard drives.
I do have three fans in my system. One is the primary one that blows out the back of the CPU. The second (square box) is on top of the processor (I think). The third (round, no square box around it) is not spinning and I don't ever recall it spinning. It does not react to me spinning it either. It is directly attached to the mother board. Any clue if this needs to be fixed?
If I have more restart problems, I'll post more ifo.
Thanks.

I agree with noochsa .. the problem could be the overheating as I left my machine on and went to sleep only for the it to have restarted on its own. I checked the fan if it was spinning at the back of the box (CPU) and couldn't feel any air blowing.
I will turn of auto-reboot though and see what happens. My computer rarely reboots on its own and mostly happens when I leave it on overnight. |

It isnt the cpu overheating, trust me I use a cpu meter to check how hot it is, well it was just working fine running on about 55 to 60 degrees C. When it just shut off, well having this problem very often too, and not much is there to be found on the net, well alot of topics just like this one but nobody seems to have any awnser. I myself also not and hope someone here will come with a solution. One question to all of you guys, do you use Norton for either firewall or virus scan or maybe both? this might cause the problem and I'm looking in too this at the moment. Also I found this link for some other info. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=290114
I think it might be norton because when I have these reboots its logged in the system log as a save dump, well everytime I'm working with the norton firewall it also creates a savedump although this time it doest reboot or anything. The strangest thing is, it also appears to reasonable random since sometimes it happens 30 min after I start for example a game, and sometimes it happens 2 min after I start a game or other programme.
0x000000d1 (0x00000080, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0xf7df576a). a dump is stored in: C:\WINDOWS\Minidump\Mini030804-14.dmp.
if you need anymore info please ask. |

Hmmm yes...mine does this too...mebbe it's an xp problem with certain configurations? It's alittle bit annoying....and though this may seem totally unrelated, mine seemed to start doing it after i started using a dual monitor set up. Initially i thought...ok, i've heard of this...some things don't support dual monitor and thus can crash ur system...(for instance first time this ever happened was after i started playing a game....after about 2 minutes of play it restarted on me)....but then again, it might be a heat problem too. I have a fancy shmancy hard drive cooler that I cannot have plugged in at the moment because when they shipped my computer it was busted.
Whatever...all my fans seem to be spinning just fine...*ponder* what ever it is...it's not a very cool problem to have. |
