Sad My computer is getting overrun with viruses. I am averaging 20 a week now! I have Freedom Anti-Virus but I use other scans as well. At the advice from someone on the HijackThis forum, I used TrendMicro's House Call virus scan, and it came up with the following results:

TROJ SCTHOUGH.C Not Cleanable C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local Settings\Temporary internet files\Content.IE5\0SXB0ZSR\install036[1].exe

Anyway I don't know how I got these, what they are, or how to get rid of them. Also can anyone tell me how to increase my security so I don't keep getting these viruses/worms/etc.? Please help me! Thanks!

Oh, I will attach a notepad version of my virus scan...it's organized into a table so it's easier to read.

amandac322,

Removing these viruses are as simple as clearing your Temporary Internet Files and purging your System Restore files (by turning System Restore off).

How to Delete Temporary Internet Files:
1) Click Start then click on Control Panel. Using the Classic View, double click on Internet Options.
2) On the General tab, click on the Delete Files... button, place a checkmark in "Delete all offline content" (this may take a few moments, be patient). Click OK when done.

You should delete the Temporary Internet Files as stated above, periodically.

______________

Turn Off System Restore (XP):
1) Right click "My Computer" select "Properties" then click the "System Restore" tab.
2) Fill the checkbox "Turn off System Restore on all drives" and click OK
3) Restart your computer.
______________

You may also want to make sure your computer is the most secure you can get it. Visit Windows Update if you have not already and install all critical updates. You may also want to consider, if you have not already, activating the AutoUpdate feature Windows provides:

Quote:
Right click My Computer, select Properties, click on the Automatic Updates tab and tick the top checkbox as well as the middle option right below. Click OK when done.

_______________

Install a software firewall or enable XP's built-in firewall to further secure your PC.
_______________

Use Ad-aware with the latest reference file everytime you scan. Be sure to "Check for updates" as soon as you open the program. Also, be sure to use the following settings:

Quote:
Click Start button once to change the scan settings.

Changing the scan settings is just as important as updating!

Fill the circle next to Use custom scanning options then click on Customize.
Activate all of the settings by changing all the red X's to green checkmarks. This includes, "Scan within archives", "Scan my IE Favorites for banned URLs", and "Scan my Hosts file".

On the left, click the Tweak button.

Under "Scanning Engine", activate Unload recognized processes during scanning.
Under "Cleaning Engine", activate Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion, and Let Windows remove files in use at next boot.

Click the Proceed button.

Click the Scan button to start the scan.

Once the scan is complete and you elect to remove the detected objects, restart your computer.

________________

Also...
Add Spybot Search and Destroy to your program list. Be sure to update it and scan regularly. You might also want to use the "immunize" feature and also lock your homepage in the Advanced mode (available from the Start Menu). This will safeguard from future infections of spyware. Using both Spybot and Ad-aware 6 will provide you with the best possible spyware removal.

Next, be sure to check for updates to your virus scanner regularly and manually (weekly at least). Run full scans just as often.

Supplement antivirus by performing online virus scans at least monthly or when you suspect infection. Think of this as a second opinion, much like you would get from a doctor or mechanic (or even computer technician). Trendmicro\'s Online Scanner is one of the best on the internet.

Be wary of ActiveX Security Warnings. Don't just click "Yes" or "OK" to any window that pops up on a website and also be sure to pass this info on to other users of the computer.

One last thing: Get RID of the P2P software! Wink

Hopefully this sheds some insight into preventing you getting re-infected with trojans and other malware. Seems like a ton of work maybe, but honestly it is way less than manually removing some trojans...and viruses...and worms....and....spyware...and Shocked

Best of luck, amandac322. Smile
