|
|
My computer suddenly has no sound! My 4 year old was on the internet playing games when it happened so I'm not sure if he did something or not. I'm also not sure if this is the right place to go for help! You guys were so helpful with my virus earlier this month. I hope someone can help me get my sound back. We've check the obvious (pulled cords, speakers, etc.). Please help! |

Try right-clicking the speaker icon in the system tray to open the volume controls. Check if the sound was accidentally muted.

Unfortunately, the speaker icon is no longer in our system tray. It hasn't been for quite awhile now. But we still had sound. I could control it through the keyboard. I've hit mute back and forth several times and tried to adjust the volume as well. It was showing up on the screen that I was adjusting the volume, but I never head anything. Now I just tried it again and even the keyboard isn't working. It's as if maybe somehow our sound card got uninstalled? I can get around a computer pretty well, this is mind boggling to me!!! |

Not sure what OS you have but I've had the same problem with XP once or twice. A system restore sometimes works.

START>>ALL PROGRAMS>>ACCESSORIES>>SYSTEM TOOLS>>SYSTEM RESTORE
Pick a checkpoint when everything was working and restore.
Good luck.

Before going as far as a system restore try this.
Go to Start/Control Panel/Sound and Audio Devices. First thing is to put a check mark in the box next to "Place Volume Icon In Taskbar" that will return the shortcut to the taskbar. Now click the Advanced tab just below that. Make sure there is not a check mark in the box "Mute All" under the Play Control slider. Let me know if this works. If not we may have to uninstall and reinstall your sound drivers. It is not hard and much safer than a system restore.

Sorry, but already did a system restore. I had a date from which my computer had just been "cleansed" and I knew it was a good date. I have my sound back, but still cannot get the icon. I tried what you said, but it says my sound program is not installed. However, I do currently have all of my sounds!!! Now I'm even more confused! |

I do have sound, but I can't control the volume unless I go into the control panel. Not even my keyboard is controlling the volume anymore!! If you know how I can get back control, I'd appreciate it! |

What kind of computer do you have or do you know what sound card you have? I can try to find the most up to date drivers and walk you through uninstalling the old and installing the new. If you have something like a Dell, Compaq, etc. give me the model # and Operating system.

It's from CompUSA, sorta a custom build, with Windows XP Home Version. I know that is vague. I did discover though, that I can control the sound with the keyboard again, it just doesn't show it on the screen like it used to. We just don't have the icon in our system tray and we can't get it there because we supposedly don't have sound. Now I am also getting a popup occasionally that says we have TrojanHorse downloader.small.EN and it is located in C://system volume. I've tried to run AVG, but it's not detecting it and last night it closed down during a scan because if a problem of some sort. I've had three email viruses in the past 24 hours too, all detected and deleated by AVG. Could the trojan that I can't seem to get rid of be causing us all this grief? I've posted for help in the virus forum, but I've had no responses yet as to how to get rid of it. Thanks in advance for all of your help! |

You probably have more than just the one trojan and yes these things can even interfere with sound. Keep an eye on your post where you posted the HijackThis log. Our "Experts" the ones that read the logs, have been extremely busy as of late. We had 5 million site hits last month I will continue to monitor it and if not replied to by tomorrow I will summon someone to look at it.
