I don't have express in front of me, however in Outlook you would go to the email accounts. Under the SMTP options you would put in your login name and password that was provided to you by your provider for SMTP. Often times this is the same name and password that is for the POP3 server. In Outlook there is an option listed similar to:

Same as POP3.

If you hit send and receive do you get this error. If not then you may have an 'Pop before Send' authenticated account. Depending on server you not be able to authenticate via the SMTP settings only and will have to use send and receive.

The only thing I can think of is he installed B9 and somehow lost the ability to send messages. If B9 has any influence in this case, without further data besides (Outlook Express), then it would seem that it may be related to a server that is a Pop before send authentication that B9 interfers with. Some proxies will do this and require SMTP authentication separately. The test for send and receive from within Outlook Express should give some hints into this as being the case.

If the send part of the poll works then authentication for SMTP may be indicated, but one has to wonder if this is really an old problem not noticed before.

If this was Mailwasher related I would expect a different message related to trying to bounce, I believe a 555 error related to relay. From the server message it appears that the user has secure login enabled but without the name or password to go with it.

I think it has something to do with plastic.
