IE 6 hang up, caused by Norton

I am running XP Pro behind a Netgear MR314 Router.
Every once in awhile Norton Antivirus 2004 kicks in and blocks my IE6 from connecting to the internet. To any website. I have not found out what triggers the event, but I have tracked it to Norton Anti-Virus 2004.
I had previously installed Norton Internet Security 2004, but removed it and cleaned my computer and registry.
As far as I can tell, I have no viruses, or any other outside problem.
Has anyone else out there seen this problem?
To whom should I be yelling at, Norton, Microsoft, myself?

Hi osoleon. How did you isolate the problem as NAV 2004? Does a process occur on your system prior to the block, or does it just not happen when NAV 2004 isn't running?

Are you using another firewall in place of NIS? (Sorry, not familiar with routers - is this acting as a firewall?)

It only occurs when NAV is running. The problem was more prevelant with 2002 version, than 2004.
Yes the router has a built in firewall, but that it not the problem. Other computers on my network are not blocked.
The built in XP firewall is off.
If I dump NAV (restart without it) I can get thru.
If I restart with nav, or disable nav, I'm still blocked.
I have meesed with this for almost a year now, searched Symantec's support from end to end.
I have emailed their support and even called them. They don't have a clue.
I still can't figure out what triggers it.

Hmm, sorry to hold up the white flag, but I can't think of a fix. I have reached Norton support in the past and have found them to be pretty good, but a recent look at their support page seems to indicate that they have made contacting a human being a lot harder. Not progressive.

If Norton can't help, and your year's subs is nearly up, I suppose you could look at a different AV product - I'm sure these forums will help; I read a lot of posts about Panda.

Shame not to know what is happening with your system though...

Hello osoleon,

The culprit might be an incompatible shareware/freeware program or updater that periodically tries to call home when you open Internet Explorer. Making another browser your default browser might fix that. Another possibility might be a corrupt/incompatible web page file which could be fixed by deleting your TIFs. Smile
