When I run NAV I always get a fatal error when scanning a file in the documents and settings folder temp directory. It scans about 10K files successfully and then cops out. Of course the error msg is not very informative. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling several times. NADA! I also tried using a univ copy from SUNY Buffalo Tech tools. That didn't work either.
I had installed all the intelligent and not so intelligent updates as well
Then I downloaded Panda's free virus scan, and now use that. It works fine but I had just paid to renew my NAV subscription so I prefer to use that one, since Panda will require payment within one month. What do u consider the best virus scanner?
Have any suggestions on repairing my NAV so it works?
Also can viruses or spyware render NAV useless or turn off auto protect? I think that happened to me. |

Have you tried going to Symantec Support? Have the automated assistant check your NAV.

I had the same problem but I did not get the fatal error until the scan
reached my F drive,I traced the crash to my downloads folder, a [RAR]
file reader that I had downloaded from MS seemed to be causing the
error..I deleted the files within my downloads folder one at a time and
I ran a virus scan each time,that is how I found which file was causing
the error.
I deleted the file reader then the scan worked,but not every time,I ended
up having to delete all the other folders as well on F.According to
Symantec it is to do with the virus definitions not being up to date,but that
was crap becauce I had just downloaded all the latest definitions.
I put back the files that I had deleted one at a time running a virus scan
each time as a test,the fatal error reoccured every time I put the RAR
file reader back on my system.The shit was that it seemed to spook
NAV into fatal erroring again with the files that I had put back after
deletion,I ended up deleting and adding them again after formatting my
F drive.
I just keep the RAR reader on a cd rom now. 
It was trial and error in finding out witch file NAV could not read,it was
a lot of work and a pain in the arse to solve ! 
The RAR reader is installed on my sytem without problems,it is only the
file I downloaded from MS before I unpacked it that made NAV crash.

Hi Andy
Sounds like you spent a really long time isolating the cause of your fatal error. Pretty good detective work. I sure would NOTwant to reformat my c: drive where the error occurs. But I might be able to isolate the critical file since I know it is inthe the c:\Documents and Settings\temporary dir. If I physically sit and what the scan, it does flash the name of the file really fast in the fatal error message and then it disappears. The name is really bizarrre though. I have a feeling it may be some spyware remnant. I will probbaly try to isolate the file right before the free month trial of Panda is aboutt to expire, because I had to remove NAV before I could install PANDA. Atleast I can run a scan now , and luckily it comes up clean. I don't know if this is because the PANDA scanner is inferior and doesn't catch everything, or if it is just as good but not easily brought down. At any rate, my computer runs pretty well now.
Are u from the Netherlands originally? If u are u write very good and literatte English apart from the occassional expletive. lol Anyway thanx for your response & I will try isolating the file soon. It's good to know other people share the same problems. |

If I was originally from Holland I would be called Andy Van Der Helliwell 
It was very difficult to isolate the offending file,I just scanned each map
on my F drive individually,I knew it was one of 3 maps causing the
problem,and I did used to watch Columbo on tv so detective work is
in my blood.
Joking aside it was a bloody pain in the arse to find Man,it took me quite
a while to sort it out,I have responded to a few posts here and every
time the subject of formatting my HD has come up,but there was just no
other way to sort it out.I was gonna format my system anyway I had got
McCrappy 2004 security for Christmas,,people were emailing me to say
that I had sent them a virus,so I installed my Norton 2004 to have a look
at my system,it found 13 viruses that McCrappy had let through,I tried to
delet NAV after it had killed the viruses but I couldn't, so I formatted my
system.NAV 2003 never had the fatal error problem once.
I had little trouble with NIS 2003 apart from Spam Alert been so crap,but
this year the firewall and the antivirus from Norton are not as well
behaved as last year,Anti Spam is a whole lot better,but it is NOT really
user friendly and it does sometimes block people who are in the friends
list,although last year it even blocked me it was so crap,I thought that
Mcafee had made it actually becauce it was so bad. 
Mailwasher beats anything else that I have used to fight spam.

I bet you are originally from Britain because of your fondness for the word "arse". Am I right?
That's what I like about CC. People from all over can collectively come together and try to solve your problem. Everyone adds alittle something, and on top of it , it's free.
Formatting a hard drive is the worst possible solution to anyones's problems. I am not just talking about the tedious work of reloading all the software, but the inability to reload it because of the loss of the key codes. I would lose alot of my apps if I had to reload. And who wants to back up files on a system thats so trashed that you have to reload XP?
I am always surprised when I call Dell Tech support because they promptly ( after taking 20 min to come on the line) suggest reloading XP. Sure it will solve your problem if you get rid of everything on your hard drive.
I will try Mailwasher. I also use ZoneAlarm and Mozilla Browser. I never get popups anymore because they can't use the IE security lapses.

Computer Cops is a great forum I have to say,I know more tech stuff
than the site moderaters though,it must be difficult for them to accept that,
[I wish that was true] but it is a helpful place here and it is quite friendly.
I am very impressed with how much people here know actually,Reg/exp
filters melt my brain just trying to work them out,but some people here
seem to br able to actually understand them,and they always say that
understanding them is easy ??????????? Yeah Right !
Other peoples difficulties with for instance NAV is handy to discuss though,
like with your problem at the end someone will be able to help you,but it
is strange how some people have a load of trouble with Norton and others
don't.Someone says somewhere here how they got rid of NIS 2003
becauce it was such a pain and it slowed their computer down,I had no
trouble at all with it,2004 is a bloody Ram hog though,I have 256 mb of
memory,and the delay/lag after hitting a button in Anti Spam is just
terrible.
In Anti Spam the bottom filter has the least priority,you can move it up
the list one place at a time,but if you have a lot of filters above it you
can grow a beard before it reaches the top with the lag/delay.
Mailwasher is well worth trying,I am gonna try and order it from a
computer shop,I don't have a credit card either and I wanna boxed
version anyway.I am very impressed with it,even though Reg/Exp is
like Chinese to understand,and me being dyslexic does not exactly
help me to understand it either,but Mailwasher rules Man !
