Hi,

I've been trying to improve the speed of my machine as it's very slow
at present. It's a P4 1.8 Ghz Dell Dimension 4300 with 512 MB Ram.

I believe that the problem is something to do with Norton AV 2003.
I've reinstalled NAV and got all of the latest updates as well as
using a suggested update of root certificates. This now makes the NAV
icon appear very quickly, but using BootVis, it says that the boot is
done in about 60seconds, but looking at the driver delays graph, the
symevent.sys shows continous delays from about 75seconds from initial
boot to about 170 seconds from initial boot with the biggest delays
being about 8seconds. My Common Client is the correct one that they
recommend. The other issue is that the CPU seems to be maxed out for
almost all of this period. The first reported service to start in the
event log is the Network Location Awareness (NLA) service, with the
second being the SymEvent. I've got a network card installed, but I'm
not connected to a network - not sure if this causes issues. My main
speed problems have occured since upgrading to SP1a and Nav2003
though. But recently it's taking nearly three minutes before I start
working!!

I've got several USB devices attached, but I've disabled any virtual
drives (my printer and dvdrw creates them), to try and see if they
were causing a delay (Pinanncle Instant CD/DVD is particularly slow at
initialising). I also use a Voyager 100 ASDL Modem.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Rich

Thanks for the reply,

Here's my HijackThis.log - although can't see too much out of the ordinary. I've also tried using a batch file, but that doesn't make any difference. The wierd thing is after the ccApp.exe is started the command window doesn't actually close and just stays there. The log file is below the batch file.

Thanks

Rich

I've managed to speed things up quite a bit by removing the 811493 fix which affects seems to affect AV programs with sp1.
