|
|
I have updated mailwasher pro. to ver. 4.0 and have tried to use the new
report to spamcop feature, it seems to work okay until spamcop tries to
connect to my mail host to verify my request. After about a minute I get a
error message saying: SpamCop connection timed out (propably due to a
firewall) So I disconnected my firewall and tried again but same thing
happened except this time the error message read socket error#10071 .
Appreciate help.

The socket error 10071 means:
TCP session was closed by the server
In short, the connection to your SMTP server was prevented or refused.
Generally, a personal firewall or application like Norton security is usually the culprit, as they need to be 'trained' to allow applications to access the net.
Since you say you turned off the firewall (did it need to be trained to allow MW to send mail to spamcop?), then it's likely you set the info for spamcop and you SMTP server incorrectly into MW.
Go back to the Spamcop setup (Tools>Spamtools>Spamcop) and first verity that you have set the reporting address they sent to you correctly. It's partly a jumble of letters and numbers, so look carefully.
Next, hit the 'SMTP' button ton that same page and make sure that you've properly entered the address of your SMTP server. (Check what you have in your email program for verification.) The elements in the Advanced property sheet of the SMTP setup aren't normally used (you'd probably be familiar with them if you do need to use them.) If you've set any of them without needing to, they will prevent connections, too. The 'normal' (default) settings for the elements on the page are Server port 25, NO SSL, NO authentication required.

Thanks rogerw, I didn't have to train my mw to send to spamcop. The
address I put in (tools-spamtools-spamcop) is the one Ive been using with
spamcop for some time - sending spam to them by email or going to
there site. The other you mentioned are correct, but I noticed in address
of your SMTP server that I never typed in SMTP just dodo.com.au. I will
do that and see.

rogerw, I typed in SMTP and now next time I used mw I didnt get an error
message, and then next time I checked for mail on mailwasher I
received the replies from spamcop to complete reporting. The trouble is if
I report 100 spam emails - I have to open the 100 singularly and reply
one at a time at the spamcop site. Is this normal or is there a quicker way.

That seems to be the way the service works: you report individual spam messages to spamcop, it send an autoresponder mail, you open the mail, click on the link to finish reporting. I've never heard of any option to gang multiple reports in one batch. It's a nuisance to deal with all the individual messages, I agree, but it's the nature of the beast.
To make things easier, I'd suggest setting up a separate email account for receiving the spamcop reports. If your ISP allows several email addresses for a single service account, use one of them. If not, then get a hotmail or yahoo account. With a separate account all of the autoresponses reports will go to one place and won't junk up your normal inbox.
I'm glad you got it working, though.

LS,
Search for spamcup, it's a perl-script that can be used to autoreport all spam at your spamcop-account.
800 + is no problem
Perl can be downloaded at www.activestate.com
spamcup from
http://toniw.iki.fi/index.cgi/projects/projects-spamcup
if you run into trouble i've slightly a modified version that worked with older versions of perl
for win32

Thanks rkloost - Ruud, This is very good news if I can work out how to
use it. I went to spamcup site, and I have to admit I must be a dummy
because I could not make heads or tails of it , I will keep trying though
and I might come to understand it. Cheers John.

Ruud, I have downloaded spamcup-1.06 tar gz but I am having trouble
understanding, this is not a programme where you click on something and
away it goes. Can you give me any simplified help or do I need to know
about perl- I thought you got them from oysters. John.

LS,
First you got to download active-perl from www.activestate.com:
http://www.activestate.com/Products/ActivePerl/
in the upper left there is a download button. Registering in not needed.
ActivePerl 5.8.3 build 809
http://downloads.activestate.com/Active...32-x86.zip
http://downloads.activestate.com/Active...32-x86.msi
I would go for the MSI installer.
after installing you can run the perl-script by 'perl spamcup'.
You might run in a few warnings, but if you mention them I'll post the fix I used to make it work.
I 've used a few bat-files as wrapper scripts. (Sorry living in FreeBSD / Linux)
I can post those too.

It seems that perl is installed...
OK...
You open a command prompt and run the program again...
If needed I'll publish the modified version... If you get erroor messages please post-them.

Also Ruud, At spamcup they say to install on your comp. LWP, User agent,
HTML::Form, HTTP::Cookies, Getopt std, Getopt and Argv file.
Do I have to search for these or are they in ActivePerl. Thanks John.

I think most modules are in ActivePerl.
Argvfile can be troublesome... I've modified spamcup so that it won't use
this module. I've written a wrapper script to start spamcup with the neccesary options.
If you run `perl spamcup.pl` you'll get a warning or it says that everything works.
I've posted the modifications I made:
#tx-rkl#use Getopt::ArgvFile qw(argvFile);
#tx-rkl#argvFile(startupFilename => '.spamcup', home=> "1" );
I out-commented the lines above so it doesnt need argvfile.
perl spamcup.pl -a YOUR_SPAMCOP_ID_HERE
or if you sure that everything you reported is SPAM:
perl spamcup.pl -as YOUR_SPAMCOP_ID_HERE

How do I run perl spamcup.pl, when I typed it into ActivePerl command
prompt I got the message
unknown command 'perl'; type 'help' for a list of commands.
Also what do I do with the modifications you have posted, do I cut and paste them into somewhere.
Thanks John.

You need to open a DOS / Windows command prompt.
Perl should be in your path.
if you run perl -v you should see something like :
###
This is perl, v5.8.2 built for i386-freebsd
Copyright 1987-2003, Larry Wall
Perl may be copied only under the terms of either the Artistic License or the
GNU General Public License, which may be found in the Perl 5 source kit.
Complete documentation for Perl, including FAQ lists, should be found on
this system using `man perl' or `perldoc perl'. If you have access to the
Internet, point your browser at http://www.perl.com/, the Perl Home Page.
###
and then your command prompt returns.
change to the directory where spamcup is located then run
perl spamcup
You should get a usage message.
I always rename perl-scripts so that they are called .pl
Default the perl-script is called spamcup
I placed the #tx-rkl# before the line to disable the line. So first check if it works.
If you get error-messages like:
Can't locate Getopt/ArgvFile.pm in @INC (@INC contains:
/usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.2/mach /usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.2
/usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.6.1 /usr/local/lib/perl5/site_perl
/usr/local/lib/perl5/5.8.2/BSDPAN /usr/local/lib/perl5/5.8.2/mach
/usr/local/lib/perl5/5.8.2 .) at ./spamcup line 9.
BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at ./spamcup line 9.
You should implement my modifications, the modified script is attached.
Regards,
Ruud
