I may have to work a function in there to time limit the ability for edits and deletes.

Necessary. Have to be able to edit AD's for posters own security. I need it when i've missed something in preview, e.g. typos.
Earlier, had to delete several posts, this with original posters consent. I'd got too tired and made an error and the only answer was to start over.
So, yes, necessary....as long as it does not wreck the thread i.e. someone going back and changing their post so that what follows no longer makes sense.

Quite required for the staff to edit and delete posts. And I also think so for the rest of the membership, but with a time limit. This solution is not going to be ready any time soon.

Limits to apply to staff?
Just edited a post with reveal IP in it. Don't think user realised security risk.

No limits to the staff, but to the membership at large ensuring posts aren't edited or modified after a certain time period.

well, there was something going on that caused a lot of consternation with those involved in resolving it at the moment, but if you feel that it is some thing important just use the quote function.
then anyone that reads your posting knows what's up when they read it.
any way"little iguana" i hope you have been welcomed to this marvelous site, i welcome you, keep posting!

You probable know some Spanish to know what my nickname means. It could be your first language for all I know. I got a laugh out of it when I read your reply.
Thanks again!

Would it be possible to only allow addition of text at the end of the edited post, preceded by an "Edited at date/time" banner? ... Only for us users and only if it's no longer the last post in the topic.

I'm with Mariner. I think it's necessary to allow the users to be able to edit their posts. I too have had to go back and fix typos and add additional thoughts just after I've submitted a post. These were things I didn't catch during Preview but DID catch them ASA I hit the Submit button and read the thing again. It's maddening but it happens. Another little quirk I have is going for the Preview button but hitting the Submit button by mistake! It's my fault but how would I correct the typos etc. if I didn't have the ability to edit my posts when I screw up that way?
As for allowing deletions of entire posts - it's nice to have that ability but I don't really see an overriding need for regular users to have that ability. Staff should certainly have that ability because without it they can't do their jobs correctly and the site could really get it's ____ in a wringer, which means Paul would be outta work and we wouldn't have the benefit of his great site!

As to allowing deletes to fix messages just posted, that's why I suggested that only the last post be completely user editable. All other posts could only be added to -- by the user who posted it to begin with of course.
As to deletions, only the last post can currently be deleted. Isn't that ideal? If you're having second thoughts about a rash response, this ability allows you to zap it! Or if you realize that indeed the site was crunching your submitted post and you really didn't have to hit that Submit button five more times.
Edit:
Whoops! In the first sentence I meant to say "As to allowing edits ...."
Just a demo of a modified edit capability in action.

WOW! I didn't expect all that personal info. Thanks for sharing. I can just see all Spanish speaking people when they hear you speak Spanish. I bet you get a lot of laughs. Anyway we better get back to the topic.
Unless it already exist and I haven't seen it, a spell check feature that everyone can use before submitting their post could be useful. If they think of something else after the post has been submitted, they can just post another one to add the additional info. That way the deleting can only be done by the staff when they see it necessary.
By the way, how do you quote the way you all do, and having so and so wrote?

If you use IE, check out http://www.iespell.com/ for a utility you can use for any browser text box.

Just click on the Quote button at the top right of the message you want to quote. Then just delete the parts that aren't relevant to your response.
To intersperse comments, proceed to the point you wish to insert your comments, type the
closing tag followed by a
tag, then add your comments between the two tags. I find it's easiest to first select and copy the first
into my paste buffer, then just paste the tag as I fit in my comments.

I'll agree completely with you Ikester, with ONE caveat. It's a situation I just experienced. I edited AND DELETED a file I had attached to a post. That particular post WAS NOT the last post in the topic but I deleted the file anyway because its' presence had served its' purpose and was no longer needed.
Now I see one sceanrio where this type of situation would be relevant, and there may be more:
- A Poster (me for instance) uploads a file specifically for someone (site admin or another user) to access for a particular purpose; Once that access has occurred EITHER:
- Site Admin personnel need to delete the file for security/privacy/diskspace saving reasons; OR
- The Poster (me again) needs to be able to EDIT and DELETE the file, if they choose to.
IF deletion capability was/is allowed in cases such as this, then I'm all for limiting the "Deletion" capabilities of a regular user, else I'm completely against it. I'm not proposing that a regular user be able to COMPLETELY delete a given "embedded" post, just that they be able to delete attached files etc. at ANY time the user feels is appropriate. 'Nuf said!
The EDITING capability, on the other hand, is an entirely different beast and carries with it and entirely different set of considerations not here addressed.

Hi Ikeb,
Thank you for the link and the lesson. They're both appreciated. The lesson didn't quote properly because of the quoting explanation in between.
