Editing & Deleting a post

This is sort of to the Moderators & Admins, although I welcome any feedback and opinions.

Do you find that allowing people to edit, or even delete their posts, messes up the flow of the threads? If I make a post which causes 10 responses, then I go back and change the wording of my original post (or even delete it), wouldn't that confuse quite a few people who might be reading the thread for the first time?

Someone might point it out down the line that the original content was altered, but for someone reading the thread for the first time might not realize that there was a change until reading the whole thread.

I find that curious too and am actually thinking of implementing a trick or two coming down the line.

I see no problem with the edit capability as it stands (i.e. there is an indication how many times a message has been edited if the message just edited is not the last one in the topic.)

Currently a message can only be deleted if it is the last message in a topic, so again there's no problem if someone just posting a reply (or a new topic?) has a change of heart. Besides it allows one to remove the confusing double, triple, etc posts that sometimes occur, typically because the site seems to freeze when busy and that precious post doesn't seem to be getting posted, so let's try that "Submit" button again .... Rolling Eyes

I just wish every forum allowed message deletion.

I don't have a problem with the edit function but I feel that the delete option shouldn't happen apart from as Ikeb states above. (double posts, etc)

Everyone has the option to preview their post so the deleting can be done then but lets keep the flow of things consistant and easy to follow.

As it is, most people making a security enquiry very rarely would need to make changes as if their post didn't make sense then there would be another post asking them to explain a little more or get a Hijack Log etc.

Its only the posts, like down in the tavern, where a edit could make the posts seem inconsistant but then this is a security site not a general chat.

Does the numbers of changes being made warrent any concern??

I agree with deleting your own post, if it is still the last one on the thread, and no one else has replied to it yet. The problem is you don't know if somebody else has just read your post and has composed a reply that will be posted just after you remove yours.

I believe editing a post should NOT be allowed, since I think it would sometimes invalidate the meaning of posts immediately after the edited one. This might have the unintended consequence of making other posters look foolish, which would reduce participation in the forums.

I notice that all forums on this site consist of linear threads, which is probably easier for the web designers to implement, but I wish the posts were in the form of nested replies, like on the regular newsgroups. It would make it easier for other readers to skip over entire sections of a thread that have wandered off topic. It would also make it easier to see what is being replied to when posters forget to use the Quote feature correctly.

That's something I would be open to, nested threads. Not something I can implement in the near term however.

It seems like a good idea to quote a posting before replying to it. I never thought of that. Otherwise you might be replying to something totally different. What a waste! Would it be a good idea to quote every post one replies to?
