First Ever GSM Cellphone Exploit

by Paul Laudanski, AKA Zhen-Xjell
April 20, 2004

In an earlier news article, I had noticed that my GSM GPRS enabled cellphone was hijacked over the weekend. Last night my providers representative knew nothing about this. I was advised to call back. At about 6:30 PM EDT today I called my provider once again to discuss this issue further.

WPA isn't enough to keep Wi-Fi networks safe

By Jim Rendon

According to a top Gartner analyst, when companies are developing their wireless security strategies, they need to consider far more than whether to deploy Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) or other out-of-the-box security fixes.

Opinion: Wireless is 'in'- How to use it wisely.

"Reprinted from September 26, 2k3"

"Hot spots" are in vogue. I cringe when I think about Intel Corp.'s new push to provide free Wi-Fi access across the country so people can try it out. The promotion promises "free wireless access for a day" and "cool things to do unwired" and encourages business travelers to check out the hot-spot locations at hotels, cafes, airports and restaurants across the country.

WeekEnd Feature: Why WiFi?

We’ve probably all seen the adverts – bloke sat on a balcony, lots of trendy glass and chrome-work around, busy using his laptop. Or the person sat in the café, on a table in the middle of the room, without the waiter tripping over wires trailing off to wall sockets. This, we are promised, is the true freedom offered by wireless networking.

Is Wireless Security a Lost Cause?

By Alison Diana
E-Commerce Times
December 18, 2003

WPA is better than WEP, but we still have a way to go before true wireless network security, Robert Moskowitz, senior technical director of ICSA Labs at TruSecure, told the E-Commerce Times. A lot of cryptologists don't like WPA because it's based on older ciphers.

Camera Phone Bans Seen as Aiding Privacy

By Solarina Ho

TORONTO (Reuters) - The camera cell phone, one of the hottest items on this year's Christmas gift list, is a growing privacy issue for both consumers and organizations.

The phones, with their discreet lens, tiny size and ability to immediately transmit images onto the Internet or other cell phones, are a voyeur's dream.

Wi-Fi Products Roll Despite Security Debate

A Cisco security problem punctuates arguments for and against widespread deployment of wireless networks.
By Gregg Keizer,
TechWeb News,
InformationWeek

The message from a wireless conference this week in San Jose, Calif., is clear: Wi-Fi is more or less business-ready. Sorry, make that more and less business-ready. Dueling speakers at the Wi-Fi Planet Conference & Expo appraised wireless data networks very differently.

Wireless security--it's a mess
By Richard Shim

Mention wireless networks to an IT professional and the conversation is likely to turn immediately to security.

Uncertainty about the technology remains so great that many big businesses are still reluctant to install wireless systems throughout their offices.
