I run Computer Associates etrustEZanti-virus, and am very happy with it, but one of the best tips I received, was to turn off the preview pane on Outlook Express.

AFAIK a virus can only infect your machine, when you open an email containing one. With the preview pane enabled, one new mail will always be opened at mail download time - if that contains a virus, it is in your machine. Without the preview pane, all you download are the mail headers.

As a rule, I delete all headers, that are obvious spam/malicious, and only open mail I am expecting, or want.

So far, I have managed to avoid most of the nasties floating about.

Having said that... Anti-virus software is still a must.
